did abel really kill the sheep?

3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.
4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,
5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

Genesis 4:3-5 NKJV

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking if Abel actually killed the sheep when he brought his offering to the Lord. If you notice in verse 4 it says Abel also brought the fat from the firstborn of his flock. That implies that he killed them in order to extract the fat for the offering in order to make the fat offering separate from the rest.

I suppose you could argue that the fat would have been brought even if it was still contained inside the live sheep, but I think this might be a little splitting of the hairs so-to-speak.
