Did Black Sabbath Get A Bad Rap ?

Does that really go on in Norway? :nono Most Norwegians I know are Lutheran Christians.

ohh yeah! it was a HUGE thing back in the early-mid 90s
there is a lot of neo pagans and satanists over in Scandinavia
but oh yeah a lot of black metal artists burned down churches-and they're explanations were hilarious

(one was in this dungeon room he obviously had made for the TV performance and said something like "satan is freedom"
most of these guys are just funny, some are downright scary

I remember one Black Sabbath concert well, the other one I was drugged out of my mind. I saw them in 1971 and 1972 at the Philadelphia Spectrum. For me it was the distortion of Toni's Gibson SG, and the melodies, I am a drummer so I also liked Bill Ward. I have always been drawn to guitar distortion, and the heavier the better. I still listen to heavy metal today, but I screen what I listen to today. And I really like some of these Christian metal bands. But I had a VHS tape about Sabbath and in a interview Tony said they are really not like that, and that the record company Reprise or Warner Bros, pushed a lot of this stuff, like making satanic looking album covers without their permission, for the sake of record sales. He also said that cults were always trying to get them to join or represent them, he also said that the top satanic cult leader England tried to get them to join, but they refused, every time that they were approached and Geezer was nodding his head in agreement. So I don't know what can you say.

I saw Sabbath in 2007 (they were called Heaven and Hell as Ronnie James Dio sings with them now)

Dio is an odd person-methinks he went to far with the album cover "Holy Diver"
dio-holy-diver.jpg

now he always said people judge it by its cover...but there is a line you really should draw when trying to make an album cover (ohhh right that won't make anyone angry lol)
I mean Black Sabbath (with the exception of maybe Headless Cross-though Tony Martin wrote that one) never was as bad as some of them...they are tame compared to today's black metal stuff
I learned something being in a band-words complicate things-one of my old album covers is just an abandoned bridge I found outside my city, and the music has no words (apart from my "one, two,...etc") at the beginniing-with the exception of a song I "wrote" called "Witch" (I say witch at the end-only called so because I was tapping on the side of what I felt looked like a Cauldron)
its the sound of the streets

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, was there first satanic looking album cover, and Tony said that they had nothing to do with that, he said they did not even know that the record company was doing it. I do know that back then, record companies did what they wanted, to most artist, and there was not a thing that you could do about it.

yeah look at the american blues guys from the 60s...poor guys

look at Born Again, no one knew who's idea that album cover was but Ian Gillan always hated it-it did look like something out of Spinal Tap

Hallelujah Chorus by Handel

Hallelujah Chorus Hymn

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

The kingdom of this world
Is become the kingdom of our Lord,
And of His Christ, and of His Christ;
And He shall reign for ever and ever,
For ever and ever, forever and ever,

King of kings, and Lord of lords,
King of kings, and Lord of lords,
And Lord of lords,
And He shall reign,
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings, forever and ever,
And Lord of lords,
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!

Black Sabbath

6. Hand Of Doom

What you gonna do? Time's caught up with you
Now you wait your turn, you know there's no return
Take your written rules, you join the other fools
Turn to something new, now it's killing you

First it was the bomb, Vietnam napalm
Disillusioning, you push the needle in
From life you escape, reality's your fate
Colours in your mind satisfy your time

Oh you, you know you must be blind
To do something like this
To take the sleep that you don't know
You're giving Death a kiss,
Oh, little fool now

Your mind is full of pleasure
Your body's looking ill
To you it's shallow leisure
So drop the acid pill, don't stop to think now

You're having a good time baby
But that won't last
Your mind's all full of things
You're living too fast
Go out enjoy yourself
Don't bottle it in
You need someone to help you
To stick the needle in, yeah

Now you know the scene, your skin starts turning green
Your eyes no longer seeing life's reality
Push the needle in, face death's sickly grin
Holes are in your skin, caused by deadly pin

Head starts spinning 'round, you fall down to the ground
Feel your body heave, Death's hands starts to weave
It's too late to turn, you won't want to learn
Price of life you cry, now you're gonna die!

The Gates of Hell was an instrumental...and that is not official Black Sabbath art
though it does look cool (I am a fantasy novelist)
Hand of Doom, I think was about drugs-(most likely it was)

Hand of doom is about heroine. And Dio was a member of Sabbath back in the '80s after they kicked Ozzy out.

Allot of the bands from the "Black circle have given plenty of claims that most of the bands using satanic images where using it for shock value. Varg, one of the big guys, points this out allot. Bands such as Emperor and Immortal have claimed to be Atheist and never actually used anti Christian lyrics. They preferred to just use cultural references. Only 2 church burnings where linked to the Circle, and those where done by Sammoth and Varg, who admitted to the acts.

Allot of the Black metal scene was either Anti religion, or revivalists or the Older Norse religion and was just rebelling over the Christian influence. I find allot of the bands from that time period to be really funny. Though I still listen to Immortal, Emperor, and Solefald, because they made some beautiful music. Enslaved also makes appearances in my disk rotation.

Old skool eh :lol
I also have cassetts and records that I got from my dad. I have a small collection. Music is probably my biggest hobby. I have music from multiple genres, even some obscures one like Noise and bluegrass jazz fusion. :yes

People shouldnt always take heavy metal a literal "devil music"

Alot of its just stylised and messing about.

I mean Iron Maidens 666/number of the beast image, was only created to poke fun at those accusing them of being "devil worshipers" and those people fell for it even more.

I love Heavy Metal myself, huge "Saxon" fan.
The only thing that can make Metal devil music is the lyrics. You can take any and all music and make it devil music by adding satanic lyrics to it.

I'm a big Judas Priest, Blind guardian, King's X, and Lykathea Aflame fan myself.

I like sabbath, I admit it. And Ozzy too. And Maiden. And Borris Karloff and horror movies.

War Pigs is a GREAT song. I just try to be conscious of the lyrics and the message, and I'll skip over songs that I feel are inappropriate. Sonically though, so cool, the Grandfathers of Metal.
