A new study claims they’ve identified the “earliest known mammal,” moving back the “appearance of mammals by about 20 million years.”

The defining feature of a mammal is a single lower jawbone. The mammal-like reptiles had at least 2 bones in their lower jaw. One transitional form had both the reptilian and the mammalian jaw joint (Diarthrognathus).

From the article it's not clear which.
