My dog is acting really strange.
When I left to go somewhere this evening, he began to act strange, hiding in the bathroom. He seemed to be a little nervous. He was also acting like there was a fly flying around him and even snapped at the air once. I didn't see anything, though.
I put him up in another room like usual to make sure he didn't get loose when I went out the door.

When I got back and took him out of the room, and sat down with him, he was shivering and still acting like there was something flying around his head. When I let him go, he jumped down and ran to the bathroom again.

He's with me now, still shivering. Last time he tried to snap at a fly, I actually saw it, so I don't know if he was imagining it before or not.

I called the animal poison control center, and then an emergency vet. All they told me is, they can't help much unless they know what he got into, or they can see him in person.
My mom isn't willing to drive to the e-vet since it's a ways away and it's late and it could be dangerous there this time of night, so there's nothing more I can do, I guess...

I'm no vet but check his gums. If they are pale white then could be rat poison which is actually high strength heart medicine or blood thinner. Probably just a fly though

It's not normal for him to be shivering, though...

His gums look normal.

I think the type of mouse poison we have is the kind that causes kidney failure.

Hope he'll be okay.

You said a he, right.

Blessings.

So you saw the fly, that's good. I'm sure you prayed for him. If he's not better in the morning you probably should take him to the vet.

It does seem odd that he would hide but sometimes when they are sick or hurt they will do that because they don't understand what is going on.
When I was a teenager my dog got loose, he got hit by a car. I didn't see it happen but a neighbor did. Everyday I would look for him on the road around our neighborhood and in the woods. I called and called for a whole week. And then one day as I was walking down the road calling here he came running out of the woods. He was limping just a tiny bit but he was fine. He was a big german shepard. I think he went off in pain and hide until he felt be,ter.

Lexy, Jake, and I will say a pray for him, too. God knows how much we love our pets, He loves the animals, too.

peroxide will make the dog barf....

Our dog pooped all over the place i had to buy a carpet cleaner.. we woke up to this smelly mess . While cleaning up i found the half chewed decon box.... took her to the vet for the shot some thing like vitamin K

Another time she grabbed a stronger poison I called the poison control # the suggested giving here peroxide a few people cookies she loves soaked in peroxide then made her run the peroxide bubbled up and out came the chunk of poison... She is about 80 pounds and it was something like a tablespoon per 20 pounds....

The points are... they can over come some poison ... you can make them barf it up if needed... and your doggie's symptoms don't sound like the same mouse poison...

Nothing wrong with praying for your pet...

He's acting mostly normal now. That was just weird, though. Shivering is definitely not normal for him, and neither is wanting to hide in the bathroom. The only other time he did that was when we had a bad flea infestation a few years ago. (He's allergic to fleas, so at that time along with being treated for a staph infection he also needed to be treated for a skin condition.)

But just a little while ago we were going to go somewhere really quick, and I asked him if he wanted to go for a ride. He got really excited like he always does, and we took him with us. He seems to be acting almost completely normal now.

No seriously, we have a small dog, and every so often he'll give us that look like uh oh i don't feel good. Or they sometimes stare at a wall you leave the room come back 1/2 hour later there he is still starring, run around in circles etc etc... How old is he, and what kind of a diet do you have him on?

tob

Assuming he was two years old when we adopted him (can't know for sure), he's about 7 or 8 now. (We adopted him in 2007.)
I feed him a homeprepared diet of meat, bones, and organs. Sounds strange to most people, but I made an informed decision before puting him on it and he's been on it for more than four years. Recently his diet has varied a bit more. When I went on a trip last month I had to leave him with my family, and while I was gone I had them feeding him a meat-based brand of kibble with freeze-dried bits of meat in it. There's some of it left, so on nights where I forget to thaw out his meal I've been giving him that.

He's never acted like this before. He's acting more or less normal now, but even if he's perfectly normal tomorrow I might have him get a quick checkup at the vet's office to make sure nothing's wrong.

My old Winchester Beaglesworth lived till about 17 on a raw diet like you described. :)

This might sound strange but ... is there something environmental that may have scared the dickens out of him? Like small baby flies that we can't see but were driving him bonkers? Or fruit flies?

I know we have had fruit flies in the past, but I haven't seen any lately. Since I did see a fly, I guess it is possible that we might have some others or their babies somewhere. I did hear a buzzing noise coming from somewhere around the air conditioner at one point.

He's acting normal now, but I do want to get him looked at just in case. Family's not willing to do that today (lots of stuff we need to get done and then church), so tomorrow, I guess.

I have never heard of a dog scared, shivering, and hiding in the bathroom because of flies.
What I have to say, you may or might not reject. But because I am only speaking of experience knowing about my friends pets and my pet...please pray over your dog continually against witchcraft. Yes, I say witchcraft. These are the same things that were happening to my friends and my pet. They eventually stopped eating and drinking and died.
I am not saying that this is what is going on with your beloved pet...but keep that in mind. You many need to get into spiritual warfare for you and your family as well.
Blessings to you and yours...

He's doing it all over again. Suddenly acted like there was something flying around his head, pawing at his head like it irritated him, and then dashed off to the bathroom. I have him with me and he's shivering again. He's panting a lot, too. Panting can be a calming signal, in a dog's body language a sign of distress or fear.

Anything's possible, I guess. I'll ask some people to pray for him.

Does anyone know if dogs can have anxiety attacks? I know people can. I don't know the symptoms, though.

Have you looked in his ears, ear mites maybe? Diet sounds good, we went raw a few years back because ours was digging at his fur pulling it out at one point, since then he's been fine..

tob

Well if he had ear mites, he would also be shaking his head a lot and scratching at his ears. So I don't think that's it.
I'm definitely going to have him seen by a vet today.

Regarding his strange reaction to noise...
He is part Sheltie (we think), and I'm told that those dogs can have bad reactions to loud noises. Although, there's no loud noise going on there....that us humans can hear. Anyway, when I first began clicker-training him, he was actually afraid and tried to get away from the noise that the clicker made. Once he began to associate that noise with something positive (food), he got to where he'd get really excited when he heard it. He used to hate squeaky toys as well until he got used to the clicker. Presumably for the same reason. Now he enjoys them just like any other toy.

But then, he has seen flies before...

I was going to say ,maybe he hears something you can't hear. Is there construction going on, or maybe a TV show, dryer, dishwasher etc that might have an electric motor going bad that's throwing a frequency that's annoying him?

Headache seizures Quest if your not off to the vet yet try and get a video of how he is acting might be of help to the vet.... You know the dog will not show any signs to the vet :(
