Matthew 27:44 The thiefs also which were crucified with him, cast the same (v37-43) in his teeth.

Luke 23:39-40,43 and one of the thiefs said: if thou are the Christ save thyself and us.
40 but the other rebuked him saying dont you fear God

43) v 40 thief is promised eternal life.

So did both thiefs reject him or only one?

IF they both originally mocked him, the one did rebuke the other and acknowledged Jesus and found mercy, for he is with The Lord..
Luke 23:
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Only one.
I agree with Malia in post 2.

What do you think?
It doesn't seem to be questionable.

So Matthew says both mocked and then luke says one had a change of heart?

Cause just taking Matthews account one would take it as both thiefs...right?

So Matthew just leaves the change of heart out correct?

Maybe I should of asked it like this:

Matthew 27:44 The thiefs also which were crucified with him, cast the same (v37-43) in his teeth.

Is this one man or both?

Hi SS,
You have to realize that each person that wrote their gospel did so using other's information and also using their own information.

Matthew was not at the cross. Only John was at the cross.
Luke was not at the cross either. He learned all his information from sources that were with Jesus or knew Jesus.
Much like a reporter would come upon information.

You'll find differences like this in the NT. It's a good thing too. It means a bunch of men didn't sit around a table and plot what to write. Each wrote what HE believed to be correct.

It is generally believed, in the Christian faith, that one thief was saved because of the reasons that Luke stated.
They had done wrong and they deserved what they got.
Jesus had done no wrong and did not deserve what He got. (this would be a human understanding and not seen from God's point of view).

There's no reason to fret over this. It's minor and there are other minor differences BUT...
none that takes away from the role that Jesus played in salvation economy, and none that would change the message of all 4 gospels.

Hey All,
I love dealing with supposed contradictions in Scripture. Let's see if we can reason this out.

Matthew 27:44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

Luke 23:39-40 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

So how do we resolve this? If Scripture is infallible, how can both accounts be true? (Oh let's make this really complicated.) Mark 15 does not record any conversation between the thieves and Jesus. Now what? John just says "two others." Now there are four accounts.

What we see are four accounts of the same event from different perspectives. Each wtiter offering what they see as the important part of the account. Matthew sees both thieves joining the crowd and rebuking Christ as relevant. Mark mentions the thieves but not their conversation. Luke shows us the conversation between the two thieves, and the one's repentance, and Jesus' response. John just calls the thieves "the others" and moves on.
However, when we put them all four gospels together, via the power of the Holy Spirit, we see a sum greater than the parts. For we see a changed life, a transformation.
While both thieves were jeering Christ, one realzes his error. He sees Jesus is not acting like a hardened criminal. Jesus is asking God to have mercy on the people who are rebuking Him; including the one thief. Seeing this, one of the thieves changes his attitude and rebukes the other. One of the thieves becomes a believer right there on the cross. The thief's further response is:

Luke 23:42-43 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

(And I just learned something I had never realized before.) We see Jesus' request for mercy granted by the Father right there. What Jesus asked for was immediately given to Him. God's mercy was immediately extended to one of the thieves. One thief receives God's mercy and realizes who Jesus truly is.
We only know all of this because we have all four different perspectives of the same event.
I would also add that if they were word-for-word the same, critics would cry collusion. But they can't. I hope this helps
Keep walking! May God bless,
Taz

Two asked something of Jesus on the cross. Only one received a reply. That reply was in the ones's asking favor. The one who believed in Him, (ruler of a kingdom), and Jesus's innocence in regard to being crucified.
As others have stated this is not hard to see in the text. It doesn't warrant debate.

If I speculate, I could assume the man who believed overheard and witnessed Jesus's conversation with Pontius Pilate and believed Jesus's testimony about His Kingdom not of this world and Pilates declaration in finding nothing deserving death in regard to Jesus's actions.

So did both thiefs reject him or only one?
Only one of the thief's did Jesus say " Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. " because the theif did fear God as the other one did not. I would see it as a death bed kind of confession.
