Hey All,
I love dealing with supposed contradictions in Scripture. Let's see if we can reason this out.
Matthew 27:44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
Luke 23:39-40 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
So how do we resolve this? If Scripture is infallible, how can both accounts be true? (Oh let's make this really complicated.) Mark 15 does not record any conversation between the thieves and Jesus. Now what? John just says "two others." Now there are four accounts.
What we see are four accounts of the same event from different perspectives. Each wtiter offering what they see as the important part of the account. Matthew sees both thieves joining the crowd and rebuking Christ as relevant. Mark mentions the thieves but not their conversation. Luke shows us the conversation between the two thieves, and the one's repentance, and Jesus' response. John just calls the thieves "the others" and moves on.
However, when we put them all four gospels together, via the power of the Holy Spirit, we see a sum greater than the parts. For we see a changed life, a transformation.
While both thieves were jeering Christ, one realzes his error. He sees Jesus is not acting like a hardened criminal. Jesus is asking God to have mercy on the people who are rebuking Him; including the one thief. Seeing this, one of the thieves changes his attitude and rebukes the other. One of the thieves becomes a believer right there on the cross. The thief's further response is:
Luke 23:42-43 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
(And I just learned something I had never realized before.) We see Jesus' request for mercy granted by the Father right there. What Jesus asked for was immediately given to Him. God's mercy was immediately extended to one of the thieves. One thief receives God's mercy and realizes who Jesus truly is.
We only know all of this because we have all four different perspectives of the same event.
I would also add that if they were word-for-word the same, critics would cry collusion. But they can't. I hope this helps
Keep walking! May God bless,
Taz
