Jesus said that He is “the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Paul wrote that “by grace you have salvation through faith” (in Jesus) (Eph 2:8). Does this mean that the Jews and Gentiles who lived before Christ and thus did not have an opportunity to learn of and believe in Him had no hope of salvation, and are condemned?
Paul seems to indicate this with respect to Gentiles who “were at that time without Christ … having no hope, and without God in the world” (Eph 2:12). It seems to me that the pre-Christ Jews were in this same situation; because their only hope for salvation was Jesus, they were unable to available themselves of the opportunity for salvation since they did not know of Jesus and thus could not believe in Him.
