[__ Science __ ] Did Two Life-Forms Merge to Create a New Organelle?

Your guy is a bit behind the times. Endosymbiosis is a fairly common event, and in itself, does not mean that a new organelle has evolved. Only when the endosymbiont and the host become totally dependent on each other does it become like the chloroplast or mitochondrion organelles in the cells of eukaryotes.

And yes, that has been observed to evolve.

Neither the bacterium nor the amoeba can now survive apart from each other, just as our cells and the mitochondria in them can no longer survive separately.
