Extreme homophobia is a fairly modern phenomenon. In the Bible, homosexuality is pretty much regarded as another form of sexual immorality; Jesus apparently didn't consider it as important as many other sins He did explicitly condemn.

Our modern revulsion against it is a relatively new phenomenon. It's like any other sexual misconduct. A serious sin that separates one from God, like many others.

The increasing acceptance of homosexuality in America, I think, is largely a reaction to extreme homophobia of the past.
