Distance calculator

That is really cool, Lewis W!

I tried it out.... but found the estimated driving time to be rather confusing. It calculated the average speed limits along the route, divided that into the total miles to be driven, then said it would take 1 day 6 hours. That caught me off-guard, as the miles to drive were nearly 2100. Then I got to thinking. And this time proved to be a good time for thinking as I figured out that the 1 day 6 hours of drive time was actually 30 hours of drive time.

Cool web site all the same. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Still, that's an AVERAGE speed of 70mph, which means you have to drive considerably faster than 70 to make up for the times you will have to drive slower for traffic, lower speed limit areas, mountains, construction, etc. Do many places even have speed limits higher than 70 these days? Doesn't sound very realistic to me, and I've drove cross country as a job an awful lot of times.

That would not work for me because I am one of those "nightmare" drivers that you never want to be behind.I go the speed limit.

Me too. If the guy behind me doesn't like it, he can pay my traffic tickets and all the related costs like increased insurance rates (a huge factor since I'm commercially insured), court costs, loss of income since my business relies on my lack of traffic violations to attract customers, etc, etc, etc.

You, the guy on my bumper with the high beams on, you wanna pay for all that for me? Ok, start writing me the checks and I'll speed up so you can break the law too.

Well, in the situation I tried, I would be driving through the lovely state of Montana, where the speed limit is 'suggested'. (That's the state where I learned how fast my car could really fly!) Some states have higher speed limits (75 or 80 mph); my state finally raised its speed limit to 70 from 65. When driving around or through cities, sometimes the speed limits are reduced to 55 or 50. Of course, in those areas, a driver meets the needs of the traffic flow.

I just hope I never come across someone with an uncontrollable temper who shoots me in the head.It has happened. But I ask the Lord everyday of protection and I have faith He will do that.

In all seriousness though, it does happen. I was driving to a friends house on the 57 freeway in Southern California a while back and saw a guy right in front of me get shot. I called the police and ambulance for him and did his first aid.

Road rage is a big deal.

Do you live by Tacoma Obadiah?
Nope, I'm all the way up in Blaine on the Canadian border. In fact, I'm close enough to Canada that I can look out my window and see cars driving in Canada. (I don't see any of them shooting at each other right now though.) In all honesty though, I can only see that at high tide. At low tide I can't see them anymore.

Have you ever taken a ferry through the San Juan Islands?

Not for recreation. I live on my own boat, so take it to the islands. But I run an RV delivery business and I've used the ferries to pick up or deliver a number of trailers from various places in the islands. Always love those trips. Last time I was in Friday harbor I purposely "missed" the return ferry just so I had an excuse to hang around a few hours longer. Saw a restaraunt advertizing the worlds best fish and chips. I do believe they just might have actually been the world's best too!
