Do the super-rich have a duty to share?

Scotland's richest man is pledging to give away £1bn. Should other tycoons follow suit?

Sir Tom Hunter, who built up a fortune from sports retail, is pledging to give away at least £1bn of his £1.05bn.

Perhaps the world's best known philanthropist is Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who has donated huge sums to fighting disease and poverty in Africa.

However, the richest 1% of adults in the world still control 40% of the planet's wealth, according a 2006 UN report.
