Missionaries Attacked In India ( CNS) -- Six Gospel for Asia (GfA) missionaries were recently beaten by anti-Christian fundamentalists who reportedly intended to kill the believers. The attack last week occurred in Orissa State, where Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons were martyred in January 1999.
Onlookers intervened during the attack, sparing the missionaries. The men, though, were beaten so badly they needed hospital treatment. "Pray for their full recovery and strength," GfA officials said in an e-mail to supporters. "... Like several other Indian states, Orissa has an anti-conversion law in effect. Pray for souls to come to Christ in Orissa and for the believers to stay strong in their faith."
Elsewhere, Hindus recently attacked churches in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh states, with much of the violence going unchecked, according to reports received by Christian Aid Mission (CAM).
"A number of churches have been burned, including those in our fellowship," a Christian leader in India told CAM last month. "Radical Hindus went into churches and even pulled Christians out of their homes, beating them. Twenty of our workers have been affected by this. The Hindus are blaming Christians for starting the violence. They are inciting Hindus in other areas to attack Christians by telling these lies."
Besides attacking churches, the Hindus also cut telephone lines to prevent reporting of the incidents. Writing from southern India, one leader said telephone lines were cut so that two leaders who were with him for a Bible college graduation and convention were unable to contact their ministry in Gujarat.
In Madhya Pradesh State, several Pentecostal and Catholic churches were burned and 95 other congregations were unable to meet for worship on Jan. 18 because of the violence. The attacks killed at least two people and forced one local pastor and his family to flee for their lives, CAM said.

Six Missionaries in India Beaten for Sharing Christ
January 27, 2003 (Gospel for Asia) -- In Orissa, India, where missionary Staines and his two sons were martyred, Gospel workers continue to face persecution.
Anti-Christian fundamentalists had warned six missionaries with Gospel for Asia (http://www.gfa.org) not to preach about Jesus. But the team sensed God’s call to continue ministering despite the opposition, especially since new believers needed discipleship. How could they abandon them?
Today the opposers kept their promise and beat the six men with the intent to kill. Onlookers intervened, however, and their lives were spared. The men were beaten so badly they needed hospital treatment. Pray for their full recovery and strength. While in the hospital, they all testified of their joy in being counted worthy to suffer for Christ. No matter what the cost, they are committed to returning to the same mission station to continue the ministry God gave them.
Like several other Indian states, Orissa has an anti-conversion law in effect. Pray for souls to come to Christ in Orissa and the believers to stay strong in their faith.
