Missionaries Attacked In India ( CNS) -- Six Gospel for Asia (GfA) missionaries were recently beaten by anti-Christian fundamentalists who reportedly intended to kill the believers. The attack last week occurred in Orissa State, where Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons were martyred in January 1999.

Onlookers intervened during the attack, sparing the missionaries. The men, though, were beaten so badly they needed hospital treatment. "Pray for their full recovery and strength," GfA officials said in an e-mail to supporters. "... Like several other Indian states, Orissa has an anti-conversion law in effect. Pray for souls to come to Christ in Orissa and for the believers to stay strong in their faith."

Elsewhere, Hindus recently attacked churches in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh states, with much of the violence going unchecked, according to reports received by Christian Aid Mission (CAM).

"A number of churches have been burned, including those in our fellowship," a Christian leader in India told CAM last month. "Radical Hindus went into churches and even pulled Christians out of their homes, beating them. Twenty of our workers have been affected by this. The Hindus are blaming Christians for starting the violence. They are inciting Hindus in other areas to attack Christians by telling these lies."

Besides attacking churches, the Hindus also cut telephone lines to prevent reporting of the incidents. Writing from southern India, one leader said telephone lines were cut so that two leaders who were with him for a Bible college graduation and convention were unable to contact their ministry in Gujarat.

In Madhya Pradesh State, several Pentecostal and Catholic churches were burned and 95 other congregations were unable to meet for worship on Jan. 18 because of the violence. The attacks killed at least two people and forced one local pastor and his family to flee for their lives, CAM said.

Six Missionaries in India Beaten for Sharing Christ

January 27, 2003 (Gospel for Asia) -- In Orissa, India, where missionary Staines and his two sons were martyred, Gospel workers continue to face persecution.

Anti-Christian fundamentalists had warned six missionaries with Gospel for Asia (http://www.gfa.org) not to preach about Jesus. But the team sensed God’s call to continue ministering despite the opposition, especially since new believers needed discipleship. How could they abandon them?

Today the opposers kept their promise and beat the six men with the intent to kill. Onlookers intervened, however, and their lives were spared. The men were beaten so badly they needed hospital treatment. Pray for their full recovery and strength. While in the hospital, they all testified of their joy in being counted worthy to suffer for Christ. No matter what the cost, they are committed to returning to the same mission station to continue the ministry God gave them.

Like several other Indian states, Orissa has an anti-conversion law in effect. Pray for souls to come to Christ in Orissa and the believers to stay strong in their faith.

Chinese Christians beaten And Killed

Chinese Christians
Beaten And Killed
( ANS) -- The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) has urged Christians around the world to urgently pray for Chinese Christian Mr. Zhang Yi-nan who it said was badly beaten by fellow inmates last week on the first day of his two-year sentence in a labor camp.

VOM, a leading human rights organization investigating the plight of the persecuted church, also urged spiritual support for relatives of 33-year old Christian Ms. Zhang Hong-mei, who it claimed died last month after being tortured by police, causing a street protest.

Chinese authorities have not yet reacted to the charges, but officials spoken about Zhang Yi-nan who they claim was guilty of "anti-Party, anti-Socialist" writings in his personal prayer journal, as he "asked the Lord to destroy the strongholds in China."

VOM said Tuesday, Nov 11, that Zhang was beaten last Monday at the Ping Ding Shan City Lao Dong Jiao Yang Suo during his " first day as an inmate at the "re-education through labor" facility."

The organization said its sources learned from an unidentified "sympathetic official at the camp," that "Zhang was beaten by fellow inmates at the behest of prison guards, who considered the beating to be "Lesson One" in his so-called re-education."

"Zhang Yi-nan is a strong man," the official was quoted as saying, "but he was terribly beaten. His hands were bleeding badly."

Zhang, who played a key role in the growing house churches, was arrested September 26, and sentenced last weekend to two years of "re-education through labor." His wife was allowed to see him briefly last Monday before he was driven to the labor camp, VOM said.

"There is no excuse for this welcoming committee for Brother Zhang," added VOM spokesman Todd Nettleton in a statement send to ASSIST News Service ANS). "Yet this is business-as-usual for Chinese Christians. We urge Christians around the world to pray for Zhang's safety, and that he will have many opportunities to witness for Christ."

Besides prayers, the organization said it is asking believers to send a note of encouragement to Zhang's current address in the prison camp (see contact info).

News about the beatings came as family and friends mourned the death of Zhang Hong-mei, who was arrested October 29th for her faith in Christ by local police in Dong Miao Dong village in Jiu Dian Town near Ping Du City in Shandong Province, VOM explained.

"At 2 p.m. on the day of her arrest, her family was called by police and told to pay a bribe of 3,000 RMB (about $400 US). The family couldn't raise that money, so at 7 p.m. Hong-mei's husband, Xu Feng-hai and her brother went to the PSB station to request her release."

However "they saw her, bound with heavy chains to the so-called "tiger bench," VOM said adding that it has learned she "was visibly wounded, and could not speak to" the family.

"The following afternoon the family was called to the PSB station, where they were told that Hong-mei had died that day at noon. An autopsy showed numerous wounds to her face, hands and leg, and serious internal bleeding."

In an apparently daring sign of defiance, about 1,000 people joined in a protest march in front of city offices the following day, as the family went to city officials to request an inquiry, VOM reported.

"Our hearts go out to this Christian family," said Nettleton. "We join them in asking for an investigation into this incident. We also thank God for the example of Chinese Christians like Zhang Hong-mei, who are ready to die rather than deny their faith in Christ."

Church sources and human rights watchers have linked the persecution of Christians to fear among Chinese Communist officials of the growing number of believers in China, which is said to experience the largest church growth in the world.

No, I don't blame Islam.... I blame the same spirit that Muhammad found in a cave.

The spirit which is responsible for this evil and the evil that men commit in the name of Islam are the same. It is satan.

I just dont think peopel should stick themselves wher ethey dont belong.

they were asked nto to do it, and they did it anyways.

Nowhere in the Bible

It doesn't say in the Bible to preach in places they won't listen, and it says to leave that village and "shake the dust off of your feet" even. Christians have always been under persecution since the Bible times. Anyway, more people should read what Jesus said, rather than taking things into their own hands in a forceful way. They should pray about it first, and then preach the Word, and not their own ideas.
