Do you agree with me on this?

Okay, i am a frequent poster over on the Nintendo forum board, and recently we got into a discussion about saying the lords name in vain, using the expression "Oh my ...". I stood my ground saying that it was wrong to say that in both the facts that it is defiling Gods name, and that it was against the rules to say it to begin with! They just kept saying it was a common phrase! What are you thoughts on this?

It was common for me too before being saved. Didn't bother me a bit. Didn't know any better and could care less anyway.

Well, that's how I felt about it back then. I was too busy fashioning my own inner religion.. something that was "me"... and didn't care much about that mythical God in the bible.

Anyway, when among others it may be appropriate to first ask if the references to God in that manner could please be dropped. If not then one should consider distancing oneself from the source.
Lost a lot of friends that way. Well, people I thought I knew

God's name should not be used in a casual fashion. Stand your ground soldier. :smt027

No, God's name should not be taken in vain, but "God" isn't God's name.

I would have to disagree. There are many names for God. "I am" "Jesus" "Father" "Holy One". God is in fact one of them and it is a violation of the second (your third) commandment to use this name casually as it is any of the others for him.

If it is used in vain, no way... vain simply means empty or without respect. May God give each of us discernment.

God is not God's name, it is a title, but we can agree to disagree, Thess. :)

Exodus 20 states that we are not to take the Lord's name in vain. What do you propose that name is? No fair using names later in the Bible though it certainly applies to them. Yes, God tells Moses that his name is "I Am Who Am" in Exodus 3 but the name Elohim is translated God in the scriptures. It is a name of God as well. The Jews have always seen it that way. Do a search on the net "names of God" and see what the vast majority of sites say.
