Doctrines of Devils

1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 1 Timothy 4:1

Are we in the latter times, and if so, what are the doctrines of devils that some are giving heed to as they depart from the faith?

The latter days started sometime probably between Messiah's time on earth and when the Spirit was poured out on Pentecost. Peter affirms this in Acts 2:17.

This is also affirmed in Hebrews 1:2.

So no distinguishing characteristics of certain beliefs really exist that indicate the "last days" as they have already begun. And generally, they are the same doctrines taught for centuries.

Some people say it is 'vegetarianism' and Sabbath keeping because in the remainder of this bible text it talks about people 'forbidding to eat meats' and 'esteeming days over another'.

Just goes to show what happens when you don't study context and culture.

Neither verse is an affirmation of anything Solo said. Peter is quoting Joel.

Acts 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Acts 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Acts 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Acts 2:19 And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
Acts 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:

This is a classic "End Times" passage.

Secondly, did the Lord pour out His Spirit on all flesh at that time or just those who had congregated at that particular place in time? If you see no "distinguishing characteristics" between what was taught then and what is going on in some of our 'churches' now, you are either not paying close attention to what is currently being taught in some congregations or you are not displaying proper discernment. No offense intended.

Anyway, we digress from Solo's OP.

Solo, the first doctrine of devils that come to mind was revealed in Genesis 3:4...

"... Ye shall not surely die:..."

So far we have the following doctrines that are alluded to as being doctrines of devils:

1) Thou shalt not die.
2) Abstaining from eating meat.
3) Commanding to keep one day holy over another.

After we compile a few of these doctrines, we will discuss their beginning, what God's Word teaches about them, and the ill effect that they have on the Church.

Thanks for those that have answered so far.

In all humility, what I said did not have anything to do with affirming what Solo said...

I know who Peter is quoting. He tells us who he is quoting..

It was general. All flesh of Israel gathered at that area no matter who or what nation they came from. "All" as in "any" flesh.

I'm not talking about trivial stuff or technicalities. I meant in general. Same lies. Just recycled and presented in a different way in many cases.

But I said all that because I didn't want to give my opinion on some of the "doctrines of devils" because many people on here would be offended. :-D

#1) true.
#2) depends on what you mean; "meat" yes. abstain from meat as opposed to no meat. romans 14:2, 1 corinthians 8 and 1 corinthians 10:25-32 and 1 timothy 4:3.
#3) assuming you refer to romans 14:5-6 and probably colossians 2:16-17. imo, romans 14 doesn't mention anything about "holy days" (at all). colossians 2 refers to interference in worship. you shouldnt be judged in meat when you eat it. you shouldnt be judged in drink when you drink it. you shouldnt be judged in holy days when you keep them, or the new moon celebration when you keep it, or with sabbaths when you keep them. they are a shadow of the coming things and the body of christ. only a shadow and we realize this. so we stand against those, according to the next verse, about those who "intrude into those things they have not seen" (as opposed to realizing we only have a shadow of what is to come).

Justification by works is a very important one. That was the main point of the letters to the Galatians and the Romans.

Galatians 1

6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospelâ€â€
7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!
9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

4) Justification by works not faith.
