We still have our tails. They are just vestigial, no longer used for balance. But like many vestigial organs, they are adapted to some other functions, anchoring some minor muscles used for bipedal movement.

Interestly nearly all mammals have 7 cervical vertebrae, mouse, man, whale from small to big don't matter.
