Dream About The Walgreens Closures

walgreens.jpg

Until we received this dream, I did not know Walgreens was planning to shut down 450 stores nationwide by the end of 2025. This is apparently common knowledge to those keeping track of the pharmacy chain, but as will be born out, the dream gives details only employees would know about the reasons why many of these stores will be closing, from rat infestations to being too highly overstocked on the front end with things like beauty products that are not selling.

The Dream

I dreamt our local Walgreens was closing, and my wife and I drove into the store, quite literally. We drove our car into the store through the front doors, which was mostly empty now as they were moving merchandise out of the store. We then drove back through the doors and went to park in the parking lot after I figured out how to make it through the doors. I saw one of the employees and talked to her, she was always friendly. They yelled out to us they didn't have any coffee. She was holding a Raggedy Ann doll and told me she was going to dye the doll's hair green, with her own hair to match. This employee was always upbeat and happy to see me. She told me they were throwing all the merchandise away that hadn't sold at half price. She told me they did not sell even one bottle of their hair shampoo even at the reduced price. She then gave me a few small bags of merchandise for free. One bag had about a dozen toothbrushes that were refills for an electric toothbrush. She also gave me a bag of apples that I had initially given to her on a previous trip. I put my bags close to the door and some of the apples tumbled out, and I noticed one apple had a deep hole in it. I guess a mouse had been eating the apple. I then noticed quite a few apples were just coming apart in the bottom of the bag and I told the employee I would have to sort my apples.

We were now back in the parking lot and there was a big mess in the alley close to the store. I guessed this was a result of them throwing away their merchandise, and people were dumpster diving and going through it. End of Dream.

The Interpretation
provided by Hidden In Him .

One of the biggest reasons why Walgreens plans on closing another 400+ stores by year's end is because of weak consumer demand, suggested in the dream by the glut of non-selling items like tooth brushes and hair shampoo, which are sold at the front end of the store.

See from 1:17 on.

And as 10:48-10:55 points out, like in the dream, their focus has been shifting to women's health and beauty products, which explains the woman in this dream wanting to change her hair color and her doll's, and all the generic shampoo that isn't selling as well.

I was confused by the part about the apples in the dream, because none of my local Walgreens sell fresh produce. But according to the AI Overview, "Yes, Walgreens sells apples. They are part of the fresh foods section, which also includes other fruits like oranges and bananas. You can find them available for both in-store purchase and curbside or drive-thru pickup."

Apparently Walgreens went into partnership with Krogers back in 2019 to create joint locations where produce is now sold.

So what about the apples looking like they were bitten by mice? Apparently in the years since Walgreens introduced fresh produce into its newer locations, rat infestations have been a growing problem. To quote just a few Reddit articles posted by employees:

From last year:
At my old Walgreens we had a rat problem. I came into work and my assistant manager said he counted 8 rats in the back, I went to the back and came up to the manager and said I only counted six. Whenever I had to grab a product in the back I would knock on the shelf to let the rats know I was there so they wouldn't bite me out of fear. Most of the time they would scatter but one rat, all black in color would stay so I would whistle to it and it would stare at me. I called him Blackie and I considered him a pet. The rats were so prevalent they were in the pharmacy too and the pharmacy crew would get bit by the fleas the rat were infested with.

From 10 days ago:
My store for the past 6+months has had a rat infestation. And it’s only been getting worse and worse. They destroy our food and candy isles at night, forcing us to spend so much time during the day cleaning their mess. Now every night when we close, we put all our food in boxes and restock them the next morning. You can hear them running around in the walls and the ceiling. They run out in front of customers. Not to mention the store smells horrible because of them. We have pest control that comes out almost every day, but he’s one guy and can only do so much. He lays a bunch of traps but I think it’s to the point to where traps aren’t enough anymore. I just transferred to this store not too long ago and I’m afraid if it stays like this any longer, the store will close. Any advice?
