I went through a phase where I was a huge Pink Floyd for a while. Sadly, it all sizzled and faded away when I learned that they mock the LORD. And speak rebellion against him.
However, it's sad because they saw what Solomon saw. Yet they lacked one thing.
Compare these lyrics:
2. Breathe
(Waters, Gilmour, Wright) 2:44
(Ecclesiastes in red)
Breathe, breathe in the air.
Don’t be afraid to care.
Leave but don’t leave me.
Look around and choose your own ground.
Long you live and high you fly
I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity. (Ecclesiastes 2:1)
And smiles you’ll give and tears you’ll cry
Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. (Ecclesiastes 7:3)
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be.
All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again (Ecclesiastes 3:20)
Run, rabbit run.
Dig that hole, forget the sun,
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 1:9)
And when at last the work is done
Don’t sit down it’s time to dig another one.
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever (Ecclesiastes 1:1-3)
For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race towards an early grave.
If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he. (Ecclesiastes 6:3)
And other themes on the Album the above song is from, Dark Side of the Moon, that appear are similar as well. Such as in the songs Money which bears resemblance to He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity (Ecclesiastes 5:10), and the song Brain Damage may be near to Ecclesiastes 2:2 and Ecclesiastes 7:7.
Pink Floyd wrote songs about their former band member and founder, Syd Barrett. He went crazy from drugs, and left after their second album. Their was a hint of Syd Barrett's madness that lingered through the rest of their years.
This goes to show the message of Ecclesiastes. Life without God is madness. Pink Floyd missed this mark, as the book concludes
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Evils in America/Rock-n-Roll/pink_floyd.htmPink Floyd said:The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want He makes me down to lie.
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
When cometh the day we lowly ones,
trough quiet reflection and great dedication,
master the art of karate,
lo, we shall rise up,
and then we'll make the buggers eyes water.
However, it's sad because they saw what Solomon saw. Yet they lacked one thing.
