I grew up with low self-esteem because I never got any encouragement. So one of my missions in life is to encourage others and help them feel good about themselves. I do this wherever I go. My special interest is encouraging the homeless by giving them some attention. I do not just give them money, I talk to them for awhile. The next time you help a homeless person just ask them their name and they will light up. One homeless man told me once, "I don't want your money; just your energy and blessing."
 
How we encourage is important too. Otherwise it could come over as shallow or patronising.
So encouragement can actually be non verbal. How we take interest with our eye contact. Real concern for another is revealed in voice tone and body language.
