Faint is the hope of abolishing war ~ yet the world seeks “peace and safety†as never before. But this idea is part of a mode of thinking which is alien to a Christian really.
These ideals consist in assuming that the great permanent miseries in human life (before eternity) are curable ~ if only we can find the “right†cure. So then this ideal proceeds to eliminate what has not worked and concludes ~that whatever plan is left (however unlikely to do so) must work .
So we have had the fanatical ideas of Marxism, Freudianism, Spiritualism, Veganism, and their ilk. However the truth is~ there is no assurance that anything we can or will do may eradicate suffering…
Perhaps the best results are obtained (from my perspective) by those who work quietly away at the abolition of slavery, or prison reform, or tuberculosis, rather than by those who think of acquiring world peace, or universal justice, or health equality internationally.
The art of living as Christians is to tackle each immediate evil as well as can. To avert or postpone a particular war by wise counsel, or shorten a rampaging war or make it less terrible by mercy to those conquered, is more useful than all the plans and proposals for world peace humankind has ever made.
The dentist who can stop one tooth from aching deserves greater praise from his follow humans than all the people who think they have some scheme to produce a healthy race!
Actions speak volumes where words can be empty vehicles for the fool’s entertainment.
Just a bit of theology~
