Every firstborn is mine

So I am rereading the Bible again, and once again I do NOT understand this part. In Exodus 13:1-2 and then 13:12-16 it says "Then the Lord spoke to Moses saying sanctify to Me every firstborn the first offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel both of man and beast it belongs to me" and "you shall devote to the Lord the first offspring of every womb and the first offspring of every beast that you own ... and every firstborn of a man among your sons you shall redeem." So in regard to animals (beasts) it is clear, but what about humans? the Lord surely is not saying kill the firstborn. I googled it, and found out that the Israelites were supposed to redeem with money every firstborn. They would pay to the priests. It talks about this several more times throughout the exodus and Leviticus. I would appreciate if you share with me your understanding of this statement in the Scripture. Thanks, Marianne
