Ewwww....worms!

I was sitting on the couch eating my lunch and noticed that there were a lot of birds flying around outside. It's been raining pretty hard for the last 3 hours and is starting to let up a bit. The birds kept flying around and I decided to get up and see what was going on. I figured they may have been getting some small worms from the ground or maybe there was a small animal out there.

I got up, went to the window seat and looked out. My entire yard was COVERED with crows. They were going crazy and I suddenly noticed something.....they all had these HUGE whitish/ yellowish worms hanging out of their mouths. Gross!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are those grub worms? I was so disgusted! They were HUGE, FAT worms. They all flew away together with the worms hanging out of their mouth. The crows flew away with the worms.

I just went out. I didn't see any worms, but all throughout the yard, there are holes about the size of my middle finger. I think I've heard that grub worms come up when it rains. But, where did they all go? And WHY are they out this time of year? It has been VERY unseasonable here (temps in the mid to upper 60's), so could that be the reason?

Also, I just learned that June beetles/ Japanese beetles start out as grubs. We have beetle infestations in the summer....the small ones and the real big green ones. Even some of our neighbors complained this past year. We had those beetle bags all over our yard, but it was so bad that we couldn't even go outside without the beetles constantly running into you. I'm wondering if we get this worm problem under control, if it will help with the beetles in the summer. HELP!
