What is the significance of fasting?

God wants us to fast. It means a lot to Him, and I'm pretty sure that if we fast, that He'll bless us and give us more...(how I understand it.)

"This kind only goes out with prayer and fasting..."
Meaning...?

.
Dear Brother Edward, I'll just print how most bibles interpret Mark 9:59, and Isa 58:
New International Version
He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer."
New Living Translation
Jesus replied, "This kind can be cast out only by prayer."
English Standard Version
And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”
Berean Study Bible
Jesus answered, "This kind cannot come out, except by prayer."
Berean Literal Bible
And He said to them, "This kind is able to go out by nothing except by prayer."
New American Standard Bible
And He said to them, "This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer."
King James Bible
And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

Isa 58:5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
Isa 58:6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Isa 58:7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
Isa 58:8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.
Isa 58:9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
Isa 58:10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:

What fasting can do for your personally is detox your body <><> cleanse your system.
Thats a good thing.
But even more then this.....when you are really hungry, and you dont eat, you are resisting a very strong drive.
This is not unlike a bondage to a sin or addiction, regarding the way it feels to be pulled or driven to do it.
So, you are exercising a certain "resistance muscle" when you fast, that can allow you to strengthen this aspect within yourself that can help you resist "other hungers" that are not food related.

I just fasted for two days.
It was not for God, but it was still a fast.
Physically, I was totally relaxed.
I could lie there and just talk to God.
No interference.
I recognized the world as blocking me and God and that blockage disappeared with the fast.
I imagined fasting these two days purposely to be with God, I can only imagine what he would have in store for me.
So yes, a fast for the purpose of drawing closer to God is on the way.

I have to admit that I could not fast as I love food too much.
Us German's love bread; we have bread as part of breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Never fully understood fasting. I understand that there is a spiritual significance to it.

The application is not what I get. I've heard it's going without food all day and when you would eat that is the time you should pray.

Never fasted myself, I wish I knew how to and its full significance to me

That makes sense. Would it be correct to say, excercising a spiritual muscle?

I did a seven day food fast before, and only took in water. When I felt hungry I'd drink two big glasses of water. It wasn't a spiritual fast, but a detox fast. On the 3rd or 4th day my pee turned cloudy as toxins were expelled.

Now, I'm more interested in the spiritual aspects of fasting...

The how to is to just not eat. I *think* that you're still supposed to drink water (only)...but I wonder if Jesus drank water for His 40 day fast?

It gives your body a rest from thr digestion process. For energy the body burns toxic cells, and fat cells.
I thought I'd have no energy when I fasted 7 days, but such was not the case. I felt good. Two big glasses of water takes away hunger pains.

I did juice fasting, pre-conversion. Not so much fun. I did one...30 days, homemade carrot juice fast. Ugh. I dropped 30lbs in 1 month, which isn't good.

These days...I tend to overeat :-( . Fasting doesn't appeal to me. Makes me moodier. Plus...I lost muscle mass on that juice fast and one before it, which isn't good over the long haul.

Still...some people swear by it. I think juice fasting makes it more bear-able, but its still no a whole lotta fun.

I read about those juice fasts and vitamin fasts too, but somehow I think that would be cheating if a spiritual fast.

I considered the losing muscle mass thing (I don't have any to spare, lol) but I concluded that any loss would be offset by the cleansing and increased body efficiency afterwards. So I did it for 7 days.

They say ease back into food sparingly after fasting, but I didn't. I ran right out and got a big greasy cheeseburger.

Ian is a big husky guy and didn't lose one pound after a 30 day spiritual fast. He said he took it very seriously though and prayed much.

I have this nagging feeling that us believers should be fasting more and perhaps regularly, hence the thread.

Believers should be careful about their intentions and motives in food fasting, besides the severe detox that most people engage in food/water fasts.

At the end of Jesus' fast He came headlong into a confrontation with the devil. How bad do people really want that kind of encounter?

I might say "it's not for everybody."

Huh? I disagree, oh ye of little faith. We have all authority in the Name of Jesus. Fear not for He will NOT leave us or forsake us...really.
