Floaters and flashes in the eye

I think it is time that I go to the eye doc

Get your eyes checked ... not kidding... i believe floaters are normal get the flashes check out...

I have dealt with the floaters most of my life (glaucoma) and have seen the flashes since mid to late '68. For a person that loves to fly and to ride motors it is important to hide these but I have been dealing with this for so long now I can't find the time to worry about it any more. This year the VA did prescribe tented lenses and this seems to have helped a good bit.

I, like Reba, recommend seeing the doctor about it. Likely nothing to worry but, then, it is your vision.

Yes I am going to the VA or a outside doc this week.

Floaters, live with them, I haven't heard of any truly successful operations, I know because I have a few, had them since childhood and have done a lot of research on them.

Flashes, ...got to to your eye doctor immediately, they are nothing to fool around with and prolonging the visit will only make it worse for you.

Ha! I responded before reading the article, ...first they say they are not serious and don't worry, then they say to go to an ophthalmologist immediately. :shrug

May I add, I was subjected to heavy handed laser treatment that damaged my left eye permanently, I have a wavy line in my line of sight and it also caused a hole to open in my eye which required an emergency vitrectomy, I went to the hospital (without any peace from the Lord) but found they had scheduled two patients for the same operation at the same time, ......so out the door I went, meanwhile I had the time to do research on the operation and decided I would rather lose the sight in my left eye rather that spend the rest of my life going in for follow up surgery, the gas bubble works only in a very small percentage of operations.

Eight months later, at the constant insistence of my boss, I went to a different ophthalmologist and he could not find a hole! Praise the Lord, Father has healed me!

I miss John Wayne:cries
The only movie I know the Duke should never have made was the Green Beret. To any Vietnam Veteran it was a joke and I believe they lied to get John to do it because they Americanized the Vietnamese in that movie. the gooks ate dogs, they did not keep them as pets.

get thee to a doctor. I've only seen flashes and floaters once, and that was during intense mania. Who knows..it could just be stress related.

I just had that myself 3 months ago in my right eye, and as a matter of fact, I'm going back to the eye Dr. for a follow-up visit. I self-diagnosed it before I went the first time, but you want to make sure by having someone actually look inside. As a matter of fact, I came across the same article you just posted.

To summarize:

What you have is a normal part of aging called Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD for short). It started with me as white flashes of light, even in a bright room each time I turned my eyes or head. That's your eyeball gel separating from the back of the retina essentially.

Good news --- for most people it detaches normally.

Bad news, in a small number of cases, the gel pulls on the retina and tears it. Fluid can leak out and eventually possibly cause a retinal detachment and blindness, but again, that's only a small number of cases.

You want a doctor to look inside to make sure you are not one of the few because the cure is simple: lasers are used as a hi-tech bandaid to seal the tear. I think it's like a few minute procedure right there in the office. As much as I bash doctors, this is an example of practical medical practice -- not the usual pills and tests stuff that doesn't amount to much. Some is OK as this procedure is.

So, the odds are in your favor it's nothing, except more floaters. In my case, I always wanted new floaters I'm that boring of a person to be entertained by my floaters, but I was getting tired of my old ones. :lol But it's also a high risk issue for some if a tear happens. It's one of those "all or nothing" type gambles.

BTW, Lewis, one other thing. Let us know how you fared, but I'll bet it's that PVD that happens to us older and/or very near-sighted folks (like me). And it happens to most everyone sooner or later, but not always with all the flashes and floaters BTW.
