In 8 days, I turn 52. I've had some minor surgeries, but never actually been in the hospital.
Until last August.
On Tuesday the 2nd, I was in a meeting and got to feeling REAL weird. Kinda like a stomach upset, but WEIRD. Within an hour, I realized that, if I threw up, I'd feel better. So I went to the men's room and tried... and could not do it.
I got worse as the day went on, consumed chicken broth and water. Got a bit of diarrhea (to put it mildly). But anyway, in the morning, I was so weak I could not sit up. WHAT was going on with me?
Called the doctor, she said to get to the ER. I didn't want to go. Had a friend come and get me, I could hardly walk to the car.
When the ER receptionist saw me walk in, she got up and called the nurse and they took me to a room NOW.
Long story, short version: I was there 5 days, I was severely dehydrated so they started an I.V. and did a lot of tests. They said I was blocked somewhere beyond the stomach and paralyzed from the stomach to the other end - hence I could not throw up. They pumped my stomach for over two days and I got nothing but I.V. fluid and morphine (the pain set in when they started to pump the stomach).
After three days, they stopped the pump and started me on a liquid diet. It took me three weeks to get back to normal and three more days to start back on solid foods.
So, what was it? They said I was "functionally blocked". That is, food poisoning had messed up my 'gut'. (When admitted, they said the only thing they could hear was my heart and breathing - no other sounds, everything was shut down).
The cure was pumping the stomach so the 'gut' could rest - (the body had emptied the other end.)
Doctors said IF I never have this again, it was food poisoning. IF it returns, then they would look for other things, but both surgeons said they see this more than you know - and are sure I got bad food in a restaurant a day or two earlier.
How do ya feel now? :D
