The Caribbean countries have an array of fruits. Not only are they tasty but the local cuisine is truly wonderful.

abide,

You have most of the same fruits that we have here in tropical and sub-tropical Queensland, Australia. I love the mangoes. They are at the beginning of the season now. The Kensington Pride variety is especially tasty:

Around Christmas time and into January, my wife and I buy them in trays like these:

As for those custard apples (that's what we call them), the season is very short. It finished in early September. My wife and I love the taste but they need to be soft to be ripe:

I enjoy pawpaw (also called papaya in some countries) but it is a different kind of taste:

And we could talk about other tropical fruits such as pineapples and bananas.

It's so good seeing what you imbibe in another tropical country. We have to go to the elevated cold country of southern Qld's Granite Belt to get apples, peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, and other cold climate fruit. These are cherries from the Granite Belt:

I love pawpaws too but there has been a problem with bunch top disease here in Barbados where the inside of the hollow of the tree is soft. I have a tree but it seems the fruit is is all yellow but does not get soft. I notice that the pawpaws now are not like the ones I ate when I was a teenager. Our department of agriculture is working to eliminate this. The cherries in Australia look tasty and the mangoes too. I love mangoes....just love them

Thanks for responding. I hope that one day I can visit Australia, seems such a wonderful place.

We also have similar problems with pawpaw diseases. My neighbour across the street has a tree with lots of fruit on it but when they ripen they get black spots on the skin. But inside they are delicious.

I hope you can make it Down Under one day.

I'm a keen cricket follower (arm-chair cricket before the TV screen these days) and I notice the West Indies team is playing Pakistan in Dubai at the moment: http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan-v-west-indies-2016-17/content/story/1061925.html
I'm old enough to remember the great days of supremacy of WI cricket with Sir Viv Richards, Joel Garner, Michael Holding, Brian Lara, etc. See HERE.

What's the state of the church in Barbados?

Blessings,
Oz

I am not a member of the mainstream church. I attend a group which keep the Sabbath. There are many people who have left the Anglican church, and here in Barbados and there are many churches that are now on their own. They are not Baptist, Wesleyan or Nazarene. It seems that having a church is big business here. So these people either rent a school or start to build their own. There seems to be a large following too. Some of the pastors of these churches have left their former jobs and are now in charge of churches. I just watch and observe and realise that the bible is so true when it comes to religious deception. Lots of people are paying tithes to these folks and they are driving some very fancy cars. The sad part is that the gullible members believe every word.
I personally feel that people have become very disenchanted with the old way and tradition of the Anglican church that they are leaving and these others are taking up the slack. As they say nature abhors a vacuum.

The Wesleyan, Nazarene and Baptist churches to my mind are the ones still holding firm.

As for cricket I do not follow it like before, Garner is now I think president on the West Indies Cricket Board of Control.
I believe the younger cricketers have life too easy, many years ago when players had to fight for a place on the team they did well. They younger ones are not as disciplined. They cannot expect to be in good spirits ready for action if they are out during the night and not getting the desired rest. I personally believe that indiscipline is part of the West Indies problem. A lot of our youngsters are more into basketball and football. The primary and secondary school are still involved with cricket, along with the clubs. I think that there must be more pride in a job well done.

abide,

Seems as though the church in Barbados sounds a lot like here in Brisbane.
Good to hear from you. Has the Anglican church become theologically liberal in Barbados as it is here in Qld? There are few evangelicals among them and the church hierarchy only wants liberals. The other evangelicals, e.g. Baptist, Wesleyan, Presbyterian, have become very Rick Warren seeker-sensitive in their approach with songs that are light, fluffy content with rockin' the house down.

As for cricket, I see that the test result was that the WI lost to Pakistan. Your WI team is not of the standard it used to be under Richards, Holding, Garner, Roberts, etc. As cricket has become more professional with lots on TV in Aust, there are more opportunities for BIG money. The Aussies play 3 tests against the South Africans, starting in early Nov. Currently we are watching one-day matches among the 6 state teams.

When you speak of football, are you referring to soccer. In Qld, the major form of football is rugby league but Australian Rules (derived from Gaelic football) is increasing in popularity. We also play soccer and rugby union. On Saturday the Aussie Kangaroos defeated NZ in a league test played in Perth.

Do you have the monsterio tropical fruit in Barbados?

It's a long while since I've had one. We grew them on our sugar cane farm, just for private use. I love the taste.

This fruit is not familiar to me. This is the first time I seeing it.

It is not that well known around here in SE Qld, but we had some bushes on the cane farm when I was growing up and I've eaten a few since them. It has a fruit salad flavour.

Blessings,
Oz
