Full circle? holes or no holes?

I'm almost coming to the point of thinking that rather than being old fashioned for a woman not to have pierced ears (even doubles), it might soon be regarded as almost avant-garde and ultra-trendy to have unpierced earlobes!

(Who knows; one day, not being tattooed might be regarded as avant-garde, too, rather than a bit old fashioned.)

Seems as if what's old fashioned and what's trendy has often come full-circle. (Ecclesiastes says there is no new thing under the sun.)

If this makes any sense.

(Thoughts?)

(PS: Okay, so this thread may seem slightly off the wall, but is there a grain of sense to it also?)

I don't know. It could happen, I guess, but it seems to me that people have always liked to decorate their bodies in some way (jewelry, piercings, tattoos) so I don't know, but it could happen.

I would kind of hope that someone attempting to be avaunt-garde or trendy would be a bit more bold than their earring piercings, but to each their own.

I guess I was referring to the idea of a woman without ear piercings as being avant-garde and 'shocking' :).

Oh yeah, I got that... I'm just afraid of that inevitable awkward moment when some completely untrendy, fashion-apathetic person is spotted with un-pierced ears and proclaimed the next "it girl", to her complete bafflement.

Oh wait, that was Lady Gaga. Nevermind.

You are amusing. :)

I guess also the thing is that now that some grandmothers and pastors' wives get e.g., faith related wrist tattoos, etc., they might expect that an 18 year old granddaughter when she turns 18 to get a tattoo also, following suit.

But I guess some 18 year old young women, showing some independence of spirit, might take the attitude, Why should go do what the generations above have done?

Or for example, many women started double- or even triple- piercing their ears in the late 70s, which means that a woman who did it at, say, 40, in 1979, would be aged 73 now, and she may have a daughter with triples done, too. And so.... today a teen with a mom and grandmother with triples done might decide, Hey, not sure I even want to pierce mine at all.

It might go full circle, so to speak.

(See what I mean?)

Because of the nature of jewelry & fashion, the possibility of not piercing earlobes becoming the latest 'in' look is rather slim for the near future. After all, all those with at least one piercing per lobe would be 'out' of the new trend...and so those would put quick stop to the new 'in' look.

There will more than likely always be some females who neither do not nor will not have pierced ears, and for these females, the small availability of clip-on earrings continue to be a solution should they wish to wear earrings.

On the other hand, it is possible that a new 'in' look (non-pierced) could slowly build over the next couple of decades, especially if the prediction of a world-wide depression comes true.

.....merely 1-cent thought......

Interesting comments, yes.

The multi-pierced look took a while to get established, didn't it? but now it's here big time. So maybe it's likely to remain?

Hi, Farouk -

It's always interesting to see where the fashions trend. I can only imagine what will be fashionable when today's babies are in their teens & 20's.

Speculative:

You know, you may be right. Tattoos especially have seen a great increase in popularity (over half of tattoo parlor clients in North America are now women) and maybe it's hard to see this interest suddenly decreasing.

The idea of having rows of studs in ears, too, will probably be hard to 'dislodge'.

AirDancer:

Yes, it is interesting.

So often fashion is cyclical. For example, look at hat design. The 1920s saw the popularity of the cloche style, then it went way out of favor, now it's back again. Look at hemines: in 1965, not a few women wore thigh-length hemlines; today the same women now in their 70s might have (great-)granddaughters who do the same, but in the intervening decades the hems went up and down like a yo-yo.

Re. ear piercing, the trend is probably related to the extent whether women really do figure it's more comfortable having the clasp run through the earlobe than to feel the pressure of a clip. Also, now it's far easier to pierce one's ears: a few moments of cleansing, a couple of clicks with a gun and you're done in no time.

Blessings.
