24Eph 4:17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.
Eph 4:18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
Eph 4:19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
Eph 4:20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!--
Eph 4:21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
Eph 4:22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
Eph 4:23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
Eph 4:24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness
Walking in the futility of the mind is seeking deceitful desires. A deceitful desire is a desire that is given to us by the spirit of this world. It is deceitful because we have been deceived into believing that if we attain what we desire of this world we will be fulfilled by it. This is the lie that Satan uses to steal, kill, and destroy our chances to be filled with the Holy Spirit which is the only way we will ever be fulfilled. This is one way Satan tricks us into idolatry. Because of our hardened hearts we are ignorant to the understanding that nothing of this world can fill that hole in our souls. Only God can do that and only Jesus can make us worthy of God doing that for us. In seeking something to fill that empty space we become callous and are greedy to practice all kinds of sensuality and impurity thinking that if it makes us feel good for a little while and we just keep doing it we can feel good all the time. Sensual desire is fleeting and short lived and can never fill that hole. When God brings us to this realization and drags us to Him through His Son He replaces the spirit that occupies our minds with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit convicts us of the impure practices we put before God and so we put on the new self that the Holy Spirit teaches us of through His Word, Jesus is the new self, and we are born again, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
Gal 6:8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
