In the midst of this old city, the modern house church is planting roots. Some of them are the fruit of missionaries from the 1800’s, or the ministry of Watchman Nee; others owe their heritage to movements originating in the countryside. Whatever their origin, these house churches are asking for prayer. Will you join us in praying for the church in Fuzhou this month? |
This Week's Prayer Guide June 29 - This July, we are praying for the central Chinese city of Fuzhou. Pray for the gospel to go deeper and wider among the churches and people of Fuzhou. June 30 - The city of Fuzhou is very ancient, with a long history spanning over 2,000 years. Walking through the city, you can see architecture from many different eras of Chinese history. Pray for the ancient King of Kings to be glorified in this ancient city. July 1 - “The local culture here is very much about tea,” says a pastor from Fuzhou. “There’s a lot of drinking and brewing tea. So wherever you go to chat, you have to brew tea. Every household brews tea, and every shop brews tea, whether they sell curtains, houses, or anything else, they all brew tea.” Pray that the gospel might steep into the city of Fuzhou like tea steeps into water. July 2 - Like many cities in China, one pastor in Fuzhou shares that “The economic downturn has been quite severe. Some brothers and sisters in our church are in state-owned enterprises, which have also had significant layoffs. Some have laid off a third of their staff. Some state-owned enterprises with a thousand employees have laid off three to four hundred people. There have also been pay cuts and, indeed, more overtime.” Pray for those who have been laid off to find new jobs, and for those who are overworked to know the rest of Christ. July 3 - Fuzhou is the capital of Fujian Province, and Fujian Cuisine is known to be one of the major regional cooking styles in China. Its street food and snacks are also famous. Praise God for the gift of good food, and pray that the gospel may nourish his people in Fuzhou. July 4 - “A very important characteristic of Fuzhou is emigration,” says one pastor. “If you look at last year, in one of Fuzhou’s small counties over 100,000 people emigrated to the United States. In one village, there are almost no middle-aged people left. Even the local police station told them they had to sign agreements promising not to emigrate. Many young people feel they have no way to get married, have children, and support a family, so their only way out is to emigrate.” Pray for those who emigrate from Fuzhou to find Christ in their new homes, and pray for those who stay in Fuzhou to be encouraged and have opportunities to thrive in the city. July 5 - Fuzhou has a long gospel history. After the city was opened as a port after the first Opium War in 1840, foreign missionaries came to the city. Watchman Nee was also from Fuzhou. Pray for all the seeds that have been planted in Fuzhou to bear fruit. |
