Hi Oats:

Notwithstanding the military example, the whole area of mental illness is a real challenge. People with mental illness are still seen as "weak", not having will power, etc. And all this despite the growing body of evidence that much mental illness is really a "physical" problem. In any event, its easy for me to say this, but it may be an encouragement to some: Part of the commission of obedient Kingdom of God subjects is to seek to heal mental illness - the Christian is not to sit in judgement of the mentally ill, but rather to be an agent of healing. One day, God's programme will be complete and the scourge of mental illness will be done away with. In the meantime, we are not to sit on our hands - the church is called to be a force of healing in this area as in others.
