Generator circuit breaker question...

We are fairly new to this area ... so a electric friend is 2 hours away :) Back in the early 70s i wanted to take small motor repair at the city college. i could not it was guys only... :hips

Being comfortable with small electric home fixes , is way different then dealing with a generator As you say only one chance.. :) The generator works so i dont want to FIX IT

How handy are you?
Do you feel comfortable with lifting the wires leaving the breakers going to the RV?

Remember...always test before you touch. We always did a live-dead-live test with our volt meter. Verify meter works and can see 120 VAC...verify circuit is dead....then verify once again meter still works.

Here's what I would do:
1) Ensure generator is off.
2) Ensure breakers are off.
3) Verify no voltage is present at breaker.
4) Lift the wires leaving the breakers going to the RV.
5) Start generator.
6) Close breakers.
7) See if voltage is present at breaker where wires were lifted.
8) Shut off generator.
9) Open breakers.

Post your results.

If you had voltage with breakers closed...we need to check for shorts to ground.
That can be done by taking a resistance reading from the wires you lifted in step 4 to ground.

Post how many OHM's you read.

Once we know the answers to the above troubleshooting....we can see what the next direction to go is.

By 'lift' you are saying disconnect?
