God is love -- sounds nice, but what exactly does it mean?

I see Jesus as love but I'm not so sure about HIS Father. In the OT God comes across (to me) as some cranky old wizard. Sorry, but that's the way I see it.

Love is a often misused word. Agage is more accurate. God is unconditional love. Charity, as it is used in 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, is a good way to describe God's love.

Strong's Ref. # 26

Romanized agape
Pronounced ag-ah'-pay

from GSN0025; love, i.e. affection or benevolence; specially (plural) a love-feast:

KJV--(feast of) charity([-ably]), dear, love.

This is how we know what Love is

1 John 3:16
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God is love, and if He is in us, we are to love one another

1 John 4:7-11

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

The Lord bless you.
