The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

The one with headquarters in Salt Lake City, led there by Brigham Young. Now with President Gordon B. Hinckley presiding.

Perhaps you have heard of the FLDS (Fundamental LDS) in Bountiful, British Columbia, Canada. They state they are being true to Joseph Smith's and Brigham Young's teachings by being a polygamist community. They have been in the news lately because of charges of abuse.

That is one of the problems with polygamy when it is abused by men who are apostate. I know that someone will be posting to tell me that I am also apostate, but here it goes anyway. I have some lineage of pioneers who came into the Salt Lake Valley and knew Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. They were not in a polygamous family. There was one man and one woman. They did not practice polygamy but from the readable portions of the wife's journal there was nothing ill said of polygamy, but it was mentioned. It has been several years since I last saw it. Polygamy is a strange thing to me too. I understand it though and I believe in the doctrine......I am also glad that it is not practiced at this time.

I have a close friend whose family left the LDS while he was away at BYU to join one of those polygamous groups in southern Utah. They were excommunicated for it and they have since fallen apart. They have no money, no love in their family. It is an evil thing. I know this will sound goofy to you, but that is one reason that I know it was sanctioned of God prior and not today. The polygamous LDS in the Salt lake Valley thrived and the polygamous today live as virtual vagabonds. It is the difference between having God's blessing and not having it.

I don't and won't defend polygamy today, but I do not rule it out as a doctrine to be reinstated in the future.

How does the LDS see the 'other' Mormon Churches?

The short answer: Apostate.

That is the opinion of one LDS, but I don't think that generally we are quite so blunt, but that is the jist. The small splinter groups who are far removed from us are just that and have been for many, many years. The polygamous groups lost any and all spiritual guidence and turned their back not only on the church, but the prophet of God and the word of God (I know, I know, we don't have it either, right?). The RLDS, now Community of Christ, can be looked up on their website. They have a relatively small membership and what I believe to be a good message, but a leadership and doctrine that is apostate. Those are my opinions based on the limited knowledge I have of those groups.

I had to ask about the Community of Christ, my small city has two of them...

Are the presidents of the LDS given par status with Joe Smith?

I don't quite know what you mean by the question, but I have a hint at what you may be saying. I will start out by saying that Joseph Smith is very special to us in that he is the man by which our Lord saw fit to restore the fullness of the gospel and use as His mouthpiece. Joseph Smith experienced things in his abreviated life that few men have. In that he is a special man. With that said I would then also say that our other prophets have gone beyond the point of belief and faith and have obtained a knowledge of the gospel. I also though don't believe they know everything. There is still a lot to be revealed.

In relation to the status of Joseph Smith each of these prophets have an equal value in my heart. As I have studied their words I find great men of God and truth in their words. Joseph Smith is not our savior, he is not our God. We do not worship him, and we do not hold any man to the greatness of our Father in Heaven and our Savior, Jesus Christ. We thank God for sending Joseph Smith to be a messenger to the world and we thank God for a prophet.
