You know...Israel grew so sinful, and God was very close to destroying them: the covenant keeps HIM from doing that

A covenant is a legal contract. It has specific terms. God never breaks covenants that He makes. It is always man that does that.

I agree with Rollo about the Abrahamic covenant.
