Greek Columns – Pillars Of Salt
Many people mock the bible for being too simplistic and overtly uncouth. Take for instance the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Here is a story of God's judgment of man's sexual perversion. The story is short and simple which does not appeal to the intellectual.
I realize that talk of Judgment evokes thoughts of insanity but the issue of God's ultimate judgment of sin has not changed.
There is a reason why this story, and many more in the bible, especially the simple story of God's offer of salvation through the belief in his son Jesus Christ, does not appeal to the intellectual. They have all turned into a pillar of salt!
When the two angles told Lot and his family to flee just before God's judgment came upon Sodom and Gomorrah, and told them not to look back, there was a reason. The two angles were not only warning Lot and his family about God's present judgment but his future Judgment as well.
When Lot's wife did look back at Sodom and Gomorrah she instantly turned into a pillar of salt. While many intellectuals laugh at the notion of a person turning into a pillar of salt God is using symbolism to hide the true meaning. For the pillar of salt, that Lot's wife turned into, represents our spirit, our intelligence, that God judged.
Many Greek and Roman columns that had sprung up in that era of Sodom and Gomorrah, and lasted throughout man's history, are used to idolize one's own intellectual prowess. In biblical symbolism it is a pillar of salt. This pillar of salt is also indicative of the tower of babel that God also judged. The tower of babel was both a physical pursuit and an intellectual pursuit by man to defy God. In the story of Sodom and Gomorrah the participants were in a physical pursuit to defy God while Lot's wife was in an intellectual pursuit to defy God. How do we know they were defying God? Lot was the only righteous person there which is why God was trying to save him. Surely Lot didn't remain silent to the sin he was witnessing.
Lot's wife, turning into a pillar of salt at the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah, is the same judgment at the tower of babel. In both stories man was defying God as a group. In the first instance man was building an edifice to himself to gain the grandeur of God to defy God (just like Eve tried to do by eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden). With Sodom and Gomorrah man was chasing his sexual urges that defied God's intended use of sexuality as an act of bonding between a man and woman. The inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah chased after their sexual perversion to elevate themselves over God's biological design and purpose.
When God turned Lot's wife into a pillar of salt it was a symbolic representation of God judging our intellectualism that excluded him. In the Greek and Roman empires huge white columns were used in their temples to illustrate their intellectuality prowess over nature. Columns were man's new tower of babel. Lot's wife turning into a pillar of salt represents the death of her spiritual faith in God. When Lot's wife looked back she was excluding God in all her thoughts even though she knew judgment would eventually come.
So in this story you have two kinds of judgment, both the flesh and spirit. Many people believe that since they don't engage in the physical sin the intellectual sin of acquiescence will not be judged. God is showing that both the physical sin of immorality and the intellectual sin of agreement (Lot's wife looking back turning into a pillar of salt) will also be judged.

Oftentimes one meets an actual pillar of salt ( i.e. intellectual), that is dead inside spiritually. They will argue against the notion of God and fight to remove religion from society. Or else they use their intellectual ability to create a different God, or religion, to satisfy a lust for their own grandeur. In either case they reject the simple belief in God, along with God's son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, and turn their mind and spirit into a dead pillar of salt.
When God judged Sodom and Gomorrah he was demonstrating the death of the flesh as it will be in hell. When God judged Lot's wife he was demonstrating his judgment of the rebellious spirit that will turn into a lifeless pillar of salt inside a person who chases after their own sinful desires.
Again, Sodom and Gomorrah represents the judgment of the flesh in hell and Lot's wife represent the judgment of her spirit of the living when we follow our carnal cravings, especially sexual perversion. Which is why so many intellectuals look so lifeless and unhappy.
God Bless
note:
When Jesus Christ spoke of the religious leaders of his time many were intellectuals. Jesus Christ referred to them as dead in their sin. They all became like Lot's wife and spiritually turned into a pillar of salt of useless intellectualism. Faith in God is simple – Just Believe!
It is also worth noting that when God judged the participants of the physical sin he did so as a group (Aids and Sexually Transmitted Diseases). But when he judged the spiritual sin of intellectual agreement, and/or desire without any physical participation, he judged the individual (turning their mind and spirit into a pillar of salt) but not as a group. Lot's wife was judged but not the rest of the family.
Accept the forgiveness of sin offered by the belief in God's son Jesus Christ (God become flesh) and gain the everlasting life in Heaven!!!!!
Amen
