i have 2 seagate sata hard drives. i had them in raid 0 for almost a year, and had no problems, then it or they started restarting at random times, freezing my computer until they spin back up. sometimes it would take a very long time for them to spool back up, i hear them trying to spin over and over again. the problem grew worse and worse as this restarting grew kept happenign more often. then one day i turned on my computer, and it was just stuck in the boot screen before the OS is loaded. it would wait to detect my hard drives but would not be able to. i went into the bios and my hard drives werent even there, even my 2 sata ports were gone from the list. so i went and unplugged the sata cables from the ports and stuck them in other open ports and turned on the computer, it detected the hard drives. then i plugged them back to the way they were originally and the computer turned on fine, but teh restarting problem continued. i got tired of the problem thinking it was my raid that was causing the problem, so i disabled raid. i still kept hearing the hard drives restart and freeze the computer, but it happens less often. i dunno what could be the problem. i dunno if its one hard drive that restarts or both. i tried installing vista on each hd individually one at a time, but i still get the problem. now im thinking of disconnecting one of my hard drives completely and see if i still get the hd restarting.

anyone know what could be the problem? anyone had the same problem?

my system specs:
q6700 cpu
4 gigs ddr2 ram
780i sli mobo
9800gtx video card
800watt psu
250gb hd x2
vista 64bit

My first guess would be, the RAID controller is going bad or has gone bad.

My I ask why you are running RAID 0? There's no real redundancy going on and I'm not sure the slight added performance is even noticeable. No redundancy means there's no fault tolerance; if you lose even one drive, you lose all data. If data integrity is an issue, mirrored or duplexed drives or mirrored RAID sets are in order.

My next question would be, does this occur under a different OS, like XP Pro or Linux?

Try one of these hard drive diagnostic programs.

Download this making sure you update the definitions first then run a full scan. If it offers you a tool bar just uncheck the boxes.. Your computer may have an infection with spyware or adware

And you are right I came back to post that, and you already did it. Yes a bug can do that, and it does do that I have saw it before, in my own computer years ago. I downloaded Panda it found it and quarantined it, because it could not get rid of all of it, because it tied itself in with the root 32 file system. But anyway look for a bug.

My :twocents

I'd say run the hard drive test... BTW, can you hear a clicking sound coming from the HD when it freezes or just before it locks the OS? If you hear a clicking, replace the drive.

well i did a seatools dos tests on both my hds, and they found no problems. i updated my bios too.

i didnt have any problems since my last reformat, but i have a feeling the problem will reappear. im hoping its the hd thats at fault..i dont want to pull out my mobo for a replacement. i have both my hds hooked up right now and so far no problems, but last time it took a over a week for the problem to reappear. the problem is identifying which drive is broke, since the test didnt show any errors.

i dont hear any loud clicks, i just hear the drive spin up and down. often it makes a sound like a stuck record player as its trying to spin up but cant.

Without being there to hear the HD, what your describing sounds like a defective drive. If you have to replace the drives, try and replace them with Western Digital. Seems that where I work, we don't have the issues with the WD like we have with the SeaGates.

Good luck! :twocents

It's interesting how different people come to completely different conclusions. I had nothing but issues with WD when they came out with their Caviar series. Failures well within the MTBF ratings and just before warranties expired. Then, they opted to replace them with refurbs because of their age.

I went back to using Seagate, as I was using them before I started this job some 10 years ago. Haven't had any issues with them at all. I won't use WD anymore.

granturissimus, I hope you find the problem soon. Be open to issues outside of the drives themselves. It's helpful to explore many options and troubleshooting time can be reduced as well.

Yeah I remember that Vic. WD went into a slump there for awhile when they started making the larger capacity hard drives.

I did have some WD hard drive issues with a couple of systems I build for some friends of mine where I used striping two 40 gig drives, but the systems lasted about 5 years before the drives took a dive so I kinda thought that was acceptable. :shrug

granturissimus,
Good luck with your issue!

Caviar were the worst drives ever, always had problems with them.

Sega drives have had a bad reputation for a while. Don't know what they're like now.

How about the 64-bit OS? Could that be messing things up?
