26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, pyes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. (ESV).
On its own, it appears that "hate" seems to go against everything we are taught as Christians, esp. to hate our family and ourselves. The notes in the DR and NASB Key Word both state that this verse should be understood in light of Mat 10:37
37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me (ESV).
I understand that. Why would Jesus, who is God, state it in Luke this way. Especially, since he did not mean for us to hate our family (or did he?). The way it is stated in Matthew seems to be more appropriate. Could it be that Luke was influenced by other Christian/Gnostic teachings or was the text corrupted at some point?
