Bible Study He knew Him not !

My guess,
John was busy in the wilderness, eating locust and honey, lol. Matt.3:1-4
Busy with his own ministry.

Jesus had not been mentioned since He was a lad, until 30 years old, I think.
I believe, He was with Joseph of Arimathaea, a tinsman, traveled by ship all over.
Joseph claimed Jesus's body, thus kinsmen redeemer.
Matt.27:57-60

Because John the Baptist, just like everyone else, expected a conquering hero Messiah rather than a Suffering Servant Messiah. John didn't understand why the Messiah wouldn't rescue him from Harrod, because just like Peter, he couldn't see that Jesus' real purpose was to rescue everyone from sin and death through His own sacrifice.

Isaiah 53
Matt 16:21-23

Hi Twinc, let me try to answer this for you. First read over Matt 11:1-3 it gives you a little more context.

Matthew 11:1-3New Living Translation (NLT)

When Jesus had finished giving these instructions to his twelve disciples, he went out to teach and preach in towns throughout the region.2 John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, 3 “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we look for someone else?

This scripture doesn’t say the John did not know Jesus. John sent his disciples to go ask Jesus if he was the Messiah or was there another to come after him. Why did he do this? He may have wanted assurance that he had accomplished the task that God had sent him to do. Confirmation of that surely strengthened him as he as he languished in prison.

Remember Jesus disciples at this time didn’t have a clear idea how Jesus would fulfill his role as Messiah. When they received holy spirit on Pentecost they were given insight. A common belief of the Jews was that the Messiah would come and liberate them at that time from the oppressive Roman rulership and restore the earthly kingdom of Israel Acts 1:6. Remember some wanted to make Jesus a king. Jesus’ own apostles didn’t understand why Jesus had to die. When he explained how he would be rejected and killed Peter rebuked Jesus for saying such a thing Mark 8:31-33.

I hope that this helps to answer your question. I agree with Sinthesis. (He posted his answer while I was writing mine.)

I agree with Leah and Sinthesis also, I didn't read or noticed the scripts that were provided.

But, in Matt.3:11-15
John knew who He was because John forbad Him , saying , I need to be baptized of Thee, and comest Thou to me?

Thus, maybe John thought He was setting up His Kingdom, the 2nd dispensation.
