Bible Study Head Covering A Symbol To The Unseen Realm by Greg Gordon

It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. – 1 Corinthians 11:10

The passage in Corinthians clearly teaches of headship where God is the head of Christ and Christ is the head of man and man is the head of woman. Though Biblical submission is right woman are not inferior spiritually but one in Christ. Yet they must choose to submit and humble themselves just as Christ humbled himself before the Father. God’s government and way of order is in such a way where each member must do his or her part. When women or men choose not to fulfill and walk in God’s ways for the Church, disorder and every evil practice ensues. The importance of head covering is not an outward reason but an spiritual reality proclaimed to the principalities and powers. When the head covering is practiced it proclaims God’s order and way to all of creation, including the angels (1 Peter 1:12). K.P. Yohannan says, “Have you considered why there is so much tension and fighting over placing a small piece of cloth on one’s head? When a woman wears the symbol of God’s government, a head covering, she is essentially a rebuke to all the fallen angels. Her actions say to them, ‘You have rebelled against the Holy God, but I submit to Him and His headship. I choose not to follow your example of rebellion and pride.'” Eve fell into satan’s rebellion (2 Corinthians 11:3), yet now in the Church women declare they are following God’s order in the Church (1 Timothy 2:12-14).

Watchman Nee says, “When many of the sisters in the church take the place given to woman and learn to cover their heads, they send out an unspoken word of testimony to the angels in the air, to the effect that God has obtained in the church what He desires.” Hippolytus an early Church Father wrote, “let all the women have their heads covered.” Others who taught this practice in the Church were, John Calvin, Martin Luther, Early Church Fathers, John Wesley, Matthew Henry to name just a few. We must remind ourselves that until the twentieth century, virtually all Christian women wore head coverings. As we worship together as the Church we enter into worship with the holy angels in heaven who cover their faces (Isaiah 6:2). In the same way sisters covering their heads show they honouring of the glory of God. Clement of Rom in A.D. 96 said, “Then let us gather together in awareness of our concord” speaking of the holy angels when we worship. The Church is to gather and worship God in the spirit (John 4:24) doing things that the world considers foolish but for the Lord there is great significance. Paul speaking as inspired by the Holy Spirit said, “we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God” (1 Corinthians 11:16). It was not just a local custom or practice but all the Churches were practicing this as with water Baptism and Holy Communion. This was not an optional thing as the default was all the Churches were doing it. But Paul gives grace to those who are not convinced of its importance from the Lord as the Corinthians partly were divided over many issues including this one.

You forgot a verse, Let's go over the context, follow along.

But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
(1Co 11:5-6)

Women who have a position to pray over/with the men and prophesieth over/with the men with short hair like the men needs to wear a covering.

The verse you left out, duh?
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
(1Co 11:15)

The hair is called a what? covering.

And also we think that Paul was talking about a regional culture thing in 1Co 11:15

I was reading that it was cultural.

But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

Paul's whole statement is that "IF IT BE A SHAME" Let her have longer hair than man for a covering.

In some places, it was not a shame.

Paul's whole thing is that If a women is used by God as a man, she needs longer hair than the men. Paul did not mention those not being used by God but had other callings such as serving.

This is a subject of great controversy to say the least. I did fellowship with the "Brethren" for a couple of years because my Daughter and her husband were in the "community" here in Massachusetts. They did follow the head covering doctrine. 1st we must consider that the Scripture plainly states "every woman that prayeth or prophesieth" .After a huge amount of prayer and research on the subject of a woman's head covering, this is the conclusion that I came to.

1. The woman does not have to wear the covering when she is not praying or prophesying. Having said that, most Brethren (plain People) women do wear the covering all the time.

2. I believe that the most important part of the head covering issue is over the subject that Greg started out this thread. "Because of the angels." It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. – 1 Corinthians 11:10" I believe that Greg made a good case in how he presented the position of a "covered" woman against demonic powers. This is not taught in our churches these days.

I suppose that someone should research this area of the head covering doctrine in that ,if this is in fact true, that demon forces are able to disrupt holy matter when a woman prays or prophesies uncovered in the church then there must go out a warning. Whether or not that a woman should wear a head covering all the time is questionable in my mind.

I ceased fellowship with the Brethren because I noted what is called "plain pride" in the various communities. The ones that I've met were great folk and I enjoyed the fellowship I had with them...."Because of the angels? Yep! there is a danger here that I certainly don't understand, just that it's there in God's Word to us.

Well, Greg missed the fact that Paul stated the Women's hair is her covering. An attempt to teach a religious bondage doctrine. If the women's hair is short and it be a shame to have it as such, she should cover it. There is no mystery to these scriptures unless you leave the key one out as Greg did to make a point.

I don't think that Greg was getting all legalistic here Mike, I think he was just pointing out a fact that very little has been researched. What exactly does it mean that angels might be active in the life of a short or uncovered woman.

On several times and several posts I have explained a reality in Corinth that bald cultist women were coming to Corinth across the gulf from Delphi and being saved. Since the gifts of the Holy Spirit had exploded there in Corinth, these women were somehow becoming involved. Paul was setting a standard for that Assembly until their hair grew out to what was considered long for that time and custom.

My question to you Mike is, what about today? Does your Pastors wife have short hair? Is she allowed to pray or prophesy?

Greetings Chopper.
Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
(1Co 11:2)
But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
(1Co 11:16)

First, this was an ordinance that Paul gave, and Paul taught us that the Ordinances of the law have been abolished. (Not the Law itself) Paul said if any man argue with this, then there is no ordinances, but better to follow peace. You don't use ordinances if they gender strife.

Now since you pointed out women Cultist where getting saved and coming to the church and used by God, Paul instructed them to cover their heads. It was a shame for women to have short hair, as men where suppose to be nature have short hair and the women is made for the man. This ordinance was passed to the women who prayed with the men on the same level as called by God. Normally a women would keep silent just being a wife of a husband in a church.

Long hair, or having the head covered (Short Hair) showed the clear and distinct difference between man and women who where praying and giving prophecy.

A women should have authority over her own head, because of the Angels. Why?

Angels do not think like we do, they understand authority, and they understand positions. It's the Angels sent to minister to heirs of Grace (To Sever) and they hearken unto the voice of the Word of God. When we pray according to the Word, they respond, and go forth to cause that thing we prayed to come to pass. Angels as well of evil spirits are all over the place.

To an angel, a women who has short hair is out of order with what God said about the women made for man. If a women cover her short hair or has long hair, the Angels recognize her position and her being in line with the Word as she is submitting to her position as the women, and will move on her behalf.

Psa_103:20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

Heb 1:14 Are not the angels all ministering spirits (servants) sent out in the service [of God for the assistance] of those who are to inherit salvation?

So an angle seeing a women pray, but is as a man looks, is out of line in their sight with God's creative order and that women will have no help from the angles who would not dare risk doing anything outside of God's order or His spoken Word.

ZERO scripture in there about Evil angles going after women with short hair. That is not what Paul was saying. Paul was saying those women who pray and use prophecy, not all women with short hair. Women that pray and use prophecy are changing things and edifying the church.

My question to you Mike is, what about today? Does your Pastors wife have short hair? Is she allowed to pray or prophesy?
