Hello from southwest missouri

I guess we are supposed to say hello after we register, so hello. :)

I am a mechanic in the show-me state of MO. I like discussing religion at various levels with people I ride with around here. I will have some questions for you all, but I just wanted to say hello first.

Derek

Hi Derek :)

What kind of a mechanic are you?

I've got a 1968 Camaro, hence my "StoveBolt" as my Dad puts it :lol . She's a work in progress :D

I am a service technician at a Cadillac/Pontiac/Buick/GMC/Saab dealership. We only have 3 techs that do saabs though, and i'm not one of them thankfully. :)

I am specialized in driveability, electrical, abs, brakes, steering, suspension, and general repair....basically everything except hvac, and heavy driveline work (deep engine, transmission, axles, transfer cases, etc.).

Nice car....I've been wanting one of the new camaros when they come out and then get a '69 to sit beside it. :eyebrow ...but I doubt that will happen.

I wouldn't know what to do with an older car though. I've rebuilt 2 quadra-junk-jet carbs and had to have help with both of them; I've only been a service tech for a little over 8 years.

But if you have any questions about mechanic work, i'll try to get you the best answer I can. :)

Thanks Derek on the mechanical advice. I just might take you up on it come spring ;)

How's your dealership looking with all the cutbacks? I'm fairly familiar with all that's going on with GM and actually just got a call from one of my buddies a bit ago about more GM cutbacks that were part of the bridge loan...

As far as my pile of "Stovebolts", I'll see if I can post another "Youtbube" video early next week. Here's an old one. (Excuse the garage, it was spring and we hadn't done spring cleaning yet :D )

She'll be in the 500 hp club if I ever get her tuned in :gah and man, I could use some electrical help! I've got a buddy going to come by in the spring to help me sort out that mess. I'm kinda thinking I went a bit overboard with the engine though and if I were to do it again, I'd go EFI with a supercharger. 650 ponies while getting 20 mpg on the highway :shades As it sits, I'll be lucky to get 4 mpg and with a 2800 stall converter, well... I"m glad I converted to front disk brakes :lol

Yeah, EFI is definitely more my thing. :) I'd be happy to help if I can. Sounds good though. :thumb

And I thought, as long as we are sharing videos, i'll share a couple of my newest joy of riding my bikes. There's a certain joy from driving a fast car, but in my opinion, it doesn't even compare to riding a fast bike. enjoy. ;)

Those rock dude! Thanks for the ride!

What are you running in the quarter? 9's?

I'm telling you, had I not been so dog gone poor when I was a bit younger, I'd of killed myself on one of those, and I'm lucky I didn't kill myself in a car :D

Did you know that a 1964 Ford Galaxy, with a 390 "Police Interceptor" w/ a manual transmission on bias ply tires can become air born on a dirt road when you hit around 120 mph? Yup, and it gets really, really quiet too :pray until around 90 mph when it touches back down :wave

But I regress :D The 1968 GTO was designed with downward force, so the faster you go, the more downward pressure is applied to the car. Life begins around 140, and with 272 gears, 160 is a rush :shades

My Dad actually has an old Moto Guzzi he's had since new in I'm thinking 84. He told me that he front end shimmy's a bit at 140 :halo

actually, my best is a 11.1

I hate slipping the clutch, so i haven't ever gotten a 60 ft time under 2 seconds iirc. If I could be a better launcher, I could be in the tens without a doubt. But I don't think 9s are in me on that bike because i'm 6'2" and weigh around 200# so that's going to be real hard for me.

I had a friend (God rest his soul) that had a line on his signatures that read "at 180 mph fear is there it just hasn't caught up yet." :) I got to test his theory on the bike once....and once is enough. :)

The GTOs were ok, but I always wanted a '70-'72 chevelle SS. ...but then came along electronic fuel injection. :D and we both know that original (matching #s) is where it's at and if you mock up a older car with efi it decreases the value most of the time.

I'll say i've had a ton more fun on a bike than I ever have in a car. It's not too late for you, you could get a cruiser and still have a blast. :) :yes

Yeah... I was watching and listening to your shifts ;) Being I couldn't do a better job at it, I decided it best not to play armchair racer :lol

My Dad now.. wow. When I had my old tired 350 in the Camaro w/ a 4 speed, my Dad could catch rubber in all four! (He used to race indy cars as a hobby)

I used to have a pretty hot 72 RS Nova that was a lot of fun. My friend had a really nice red 70 Chevelle that we used to cruise around w/ open headers. That was a blast! They are nice, but they don't handle as well as the GTO's did at higher speed. Long story short, I was very upset when I came home and my GTO was gone! (My brother sold it while I was out of town for about a year :mad )

As far as mocking up older cars with efi etc, it's not like it used to be. If you've got $20,000 in a 1st Gen Camaro, you can get your money back out of it, especially if it's got mods. Suspension and drivetrain are key mod's that you'll never loose you money on. Yup, the days of sinking $20,000 + into a Camaro and then selling it for 8,000 are long gone... that is, unless you've forgotten that were in the 21st century :nod

I'd really like to get a bike, hey, I've had my fun in cars :rolling but I've got to be honest. My eyes are getting bad, and I'm a little slower now with the reflexes than a few years back... It's very, very tempting though :chin
