Pilate the governor wanted to free Jesus because he knew he was innocent. The Jews resisted, they wanted Jesus to be killed. Pilate was afraid of the Jews and surrendered; he washed his hands and said: "I am not guilty of the blood of this righteous man", but the Jews shouted: "His blood be on us and on our children". With this answer they wanted to say to Pilate: "You think this man is worth something? You fool! We will take the guilt of his death on ourselves and you will see that this man's life is worthless!". I looked at some commentators regarding this verse and they were shocked and rightly so. When you think about the guilt that the Jews have taken on themselves you will understand why. Jesus Christ is the holy and sinless God. Of course his blood is worth a lot, a lot. To be guilty of his death is such a huge sin that cannot be compared to anything. Listen, if you were to kill all 8 billion people in this world it would be nothing compared to the death of Jesus. Now can you understand why the commentators are shocked?
The Jews have taken the blame and are paying the debt. But this price is infinite. History proves that the Jews have often suffered for this price.
But praise be to God! Even for a Jew there is hope. Every Jew can buy himself free from the sin of his fathers by accepting Jesus Christ. Leave Judaism and come to Christianity and all your sins will be forgiven! The blood of Christ is ultimate, it pays for every sin, even this huge sin!
But if you reject Christ, be sure that the sins of your fathers are on you.
