History Repeats Itself: Kid Always sick

I am a mother of a 3 and a half year old little boy who goes to day care and also goes to school for early education, neither of which he attends full time as I only work part time. When he is with me, we are always good about hand washing. Good with eating our veggies and drinking lots of water too. Covering when coughing and sneezing is expressed as important too but not always remembered; he's got some developmental issues, getting screened for autism July 19th that's a whole other topic in itself!! I can't always be there with him to wash his hands, I can't always make sure somebody else doesn't sneeze on him, or stop him from playing with a germy toy.

Grandma was first with a stomach bug, he was second, I was third... he just got over the stomach bug on Saturday, Sunday he was coming down with a cold already, and last night was miserable for me as the first night of a cold always is. I am at work and I think I am gonna die (I know I'm not) I only got about 2 hours of sleep.

He went for weeks without getting sick and sure enough it was because I did not work for a long time and he barely had to go to day care. As soon as he went back there, he came home sick. I was often sick as a child too, I had strep throat so much, even had scarlet fever once, and my poor boy is following in my foot steps. He had to get tubes in his ears after getting ear infections every month last year, so far no ear infections and step only once so far, but this back to back sickness is really stressing me out.

Frustrated... any tips? Im losing my mind... and sleep... :eeeekkk

Well, I'm a big believer in vitamins (and good nutrition), fresh air and plenty of sunshine--- also rejuvenating sleep and times of relaxation as stress is a big culprit. When I was a kid and did not take vitamins, I too was as sickly as they come, except in the summer when I played in the sun as a kid and then did not get sick (only recently have I made the connection between the good health effects of cholesterol, sunlight and vitamin D). Now for the past about 35 years been taking them and hardly ever to the doctor, winter nor summer, and I'm now 53.

Nutrition caloric needs:

Protein, Monounsaterated fats, and Saturated fats are best. Keep the Polyunsaturated (vegetable-based oils and fats) down more.

Growing kids could use carbs more than us adults, but keep the sugars to a minimum.

Then if you know the alphabet, A-E and minerals, although I am aware it may be hard to get a young kid to take such things unless it's in some fun form. Maybe a 100% RDA multi several times a day, like a treat will probably get him enough except for vitamin D (get sunlight for that), and possibly C.

Gunnar takes his vitamins every night. If we go out of routine and I forget a step, I have a kid coming down the stairs instead of in his bed where I left him. When he is home, he's outside from the moment he wakes up until I scrub a layer of dirt off before bed. He picks up all these germs from daycare and school, its like a breeding ground there. I wish I could keep him home with me all the time, but being a single mom I have to work to support us.

I know a mom who tells me how her kids are never sick... they don't go to school yet and they also don't go to day care, I don't have that luxury.

Sleep is my problem. I sometimes have to work a full 8 hours and then come home and work another 5 on the side on my home computer, things are a little tight financially right now. I know for a fact, if I don't get enough sleep I get sick. I think the same goes for the little guy, too. He usually gets about 12 hours a night, but there were a few nights last week because of my work schedule he only got about 8, so that's probably what did it. Anything different in the routine and it throws everyone out of whack.

Its just frustrating. Thanks for your advice.

I know, it gets sickening all the things we are told to stay away from. I remember my friend when she first became a mom, she wouldn't look at her baby without using hand sanitizer first, it wasn't quite that extreme but it was close.

I've been doing a lot of reading of autism lately, since I'm dealing with it (possibly) and my husband passed 8 months ago, he battled with mental illness and was at one time unofficially diagnosed as autistic. One thing I remembered odd of him, he would always walk on his toes if barefoot... characteristic of autism. Autism CAN be hereditary. But being a son of a dad who was diagnosed as bipolar and a mom who has a history of epilepsy... my kid needs a lot of prayer.

And I need to correct my previous post... I don't have a cold, I have the flu, and I am miserable!!! My son and I managed to fly under the radar a month ago when grandma came down with it, I guess I wasn't so lucky this time around.

One hour left of work...

Find some raw, unfiltered wildflower honey. You can get it local at a farmer's market. It is a super food and will help with allergies if you have any. It is worthless if it is cooked (most every food chain brand). Take a spoonful or too every day.

Drink teas for your flu and strepped throat. Add honey and fresh squeezed lemon. Lemon is an astringent. Apple Cider Vinegar (Bragg's is a common a great brand) diluted with water at about an ounce for a tall glass will do well, too. Gargling it for a few minutes is a great idea! Warm salt water gargling helps if you cant find the PCV. I have even crushed an asprin in warm water to sooth the pain. Try to limit the amount of unnatural sugar intake as that has slowed down recovery for me in the past.

Since you mentioned that he has had it before he has also probably taken antibiotics. That kills the good floura in your intestinal tract that your body needs to digest and absorb the healthy food you give your child. Nutrition is so important to your body's ability to fight disease and infection. What I have done in the past is taken a water enema (you can get a gravity fed kit rather cheaply) to clear out my bowls and start a probiotic natural supplement (it will cost you $30 on the low end). Some swear by water enemas, other say there is no difference, but I will say that I have always felt better by magnitudes afterwards (some here would say because I am full of crap!).

Take that last bit of advice as far as you are willing to go. Despite what people think about water enemas, they are not painful or weird, but well worth the momentary discomfort (feels like you have to poop) and time (20 minutes tops!). Just lock the door. It does put you in a compromising position.

I take a natural approach. I haven't taken meds for a few years and because of my habits I haven't needed to... But of course, if he is ever in a life threatening condition he needs to go to the hospital.

One last note, I used to get strepped throat at least twice a year and would get antibiotics from the doc. I lost my health insurance since I graduated college and had to find a different method of healing myself. What I learned was out of neccessity and I have not had strepped throat since. I am not legally qualified to say it cured my chronic illness, but I can't ignore the correlation.

Whatever you choose to do for you and your son, be sure to fully educate yourself from multiple sources.

First of all, let me tell you how sorry I am to hear of the loss of your husband. That must have been, and I would think is still, a difficult thing for you to deal with. I'm sure the loss of his father hasn't been easy on him either.

Building up his immunity is probably your best bet. I always did a lot of research when I was trying to take care of any issues. I have done many of the things that have been suggested in previous posts. (and still do them)

I worked in Head Start so I am familiar with children becoming ill. Even though you do everything possible to help protect them from germs, the children still pass things around. We had them cough or sneeze into the crook of their arm, so there weren't as many germs being passed around because of sneezing or coughing into their hands. There were to wash their hands if they were seen picking their noses, wash their hands before snack, as well as after going to the bathroom, and after coming in from the playground.

I hope you both feel better soon. :yes

When I am working I wash my hands before AND after I use the restroom. My work takes me to a myrad of places in any sort of sanitation. Got to think about ALL your 2000 parts, you know.

Thanks everyone for support and advice. It is hard, stress helps with the whole getting sick factor too. Yesterday would have been our 4th wedding anniversary.

Gunnar was on antibiotics a lot last year, the last round being in December. He was on them right up until he got tubes put in his ears. His ear infections messed everything up, his hearing and speech, Dr. said he probably had a 20-30% hearing loss at one point from the fluid. Since getting tubes, he talks so much clearer. Gickey Gouse now sounds normal like Mickey Mouse :)

Ugh I tried so hard to get better sleep last night. I hardly get cell service at my house but a text msg squeezed in around midnight, 6 hours after it was sent and that pretty much started a bad night of sleep. I managed maybe 5 hours, better than 2 the night before but no where near enough. I am feeling a lot better today though. After work last night I relaxed a lot.

Gunnar is feeling a little better too, but he's got this nagging cough. I don't know how he sleeps with it, I didnt hear him as much last night so I think he got more sleep too. He's got a busy day today, day care and school. He also has seasonal allergies so when he gets a cold as well, he isn't a happy camper. And the next couple days its going to be near 90 and humid. Not looking forward to that either!!

Oh and I am a postal clerk. The only mail I touch is for the PO boxes, about 125 of them but my hands are completely black when I am done. I too wash my hands before and after using the restroom. Mail is so incredibly dirty, I didn't know to what extent until I started working in the postal service. ishy!

I am sorry to hear about your husband.

One of the things that many people don't know about sleeplessness is that it can be caused by your body trying to expel something. If you find yourself not going #2 much, it should be considered. The other obvious problems could be a lack of exercise. Go for a good walk sometime during they day.

I swear, the stuff they tell us to stay away from are the very things making us all sick.
IS this really what you want to say?

Thanks for pointing out my bad grammar, Reba. Depending on the way the "are the very things" are interpreted can result in two very different meanings.

My intent was to say, "I swear, the stuff they tell us to stay away from is the very advice making us all sick.

Thanks again for catching that so that I am not misunderstood. That's the second time this month a fellow poster caught my poor wording so I better wake up a tad more before posting. :lol

I was hoping to be able to just fix it for ya...You dont make very many.... I make so many i wouldn't see em but for the red lines... you ran away to fast...

My wording is so poor I have to preview my post about 5 times before I submit. Is there a cure for that... or an app?

I swear... this crud is hanging on because I cannot sleep. Last night I coughed all night long. At 3am I had to go outside and turn off the hose my mom left on because it kept the water pump running all night. That woke me up twice. Then at 5:30am I got a text from my sis-in-law saying she couldn't babysit my son today because she was sick and had to go to the doctor because she had major chest pains all night, she is 22. So it was a mad dash to find someone to take Gunnar today. He has to miss preschool today and stay the whole day at a day care where he will probably pick up some other germs. He was disappointed, he was really looking forward to Auntie Chelsea and 8 month old cousin Noah coming over. He cried all the way to day care. :sad

The problem with being the back up person to cover the boss, there is no one to cover me, so I have been working all week, sick and almost falling over. Praying for another slow day today. I have been blessed with that the last few days!! :pray

Well, maybe a little laughter might make things better (it relieves stress). You have the board's permission to use this emoticon often for this thread.

GOOD NEWS!! :lol:eeeekkk:pray I am not dying
Bad news...:shrug:help Bronchitis, double ear infection, and sinusitis.

I went to urgent care after work. My blood pressure and pulse were elevated because my body was under so much stress, I was at 142/113 and 120bpm... a month ago at my check up my bp was 100/69 and my bpm was 83. No wonder I haven't been sleeping all week!!!!!! I got to the clinic at 6:10, I didn't leave until 7:35, it seemed it was longer than it actually was, but it was still a long wait in that little exam room. I was starting to think they forgot about me and was wondering what the longest wait in one of those rooms ever was and I wondered if anyone ever died during their wait. I was going a little nutso in there.

I am on antibiotics and I am at work again. I have about 50 more minutes of work and then I don't have to come back here until Friday, so I have a few days of recovery!:clap

there I used some emoticons :shocked!:waving:toofunny:clap:eeeekkk:lol:thumbsup

Glad you're feeling better. As for the BP, yeah that normally goes up with stress.

The 142 is perfectly normal, especially for being sick, The diastolic 113 is moderately elevated, which indicates to me your heart is not resting well between beats and 120bpm is high (unless you just jogged around the block). Conclusion: with an unrested heart like that you will not sleep right. :toofunny (But we already knew that, right?) :lol

Normal BP: systolic 110- 140 Diastolic 70 - 90 Pulse 60 - 80
