Hehe. I think its from an old Simpson's episode, the one where Ned's kids become Jewish and then become Hollywood moguls.
Anyway, its like this...now that I'm a Christian, I find that pop culture mostly doesn't suit me. I'm no better than anybody else--a lot of it is because I did Teen Challenge, so I was mostly media-less for 1 year+--but...I dunno.
That, and, Hollywood has always been immoral. Ever read Blonde? Its one of many novels--this one by Joyce Carol Oates--about Marilyn Monroe. Based in part on real stuff, of course, and...wow. Old Hollywood was a lot like today's Hollywood, only I think more misogynistic and openly racist. Oh, and they generally gave stars more space in the media, and a lot of the blatantly immoral stuff was hushed up, for obvious reasons.
So, I'm wondering...can anything good for Christians come out of an industry that's so anti-Christ in terms of outlook and lifestyle? I mean, sure, they can make Christian movies. Its happened before. The Ten Commandments, for instance. But...
...should we be spending as much time and money as we do, as a group, on Hollywood stuff while at the same time periodically protesting blatant violations of our morals? I don't know of an alternative, clearly, lol. I get the sense that some of the value shifts in this country (the US) have been due in part to media influences, the way they frame things in movies, TV, sometimes on the new (that one cuts both ways--right and left...).
Like...have you ever wondered why, suddenly, actors and actresses are asked their opinions on everything? Like it matters...to me? And they're treated like authorities? I mean, I don't doubt that a lot of them are smart and knowledgable. That's not the issue. Its just...why are you asking celebrities all these Qs that could be asked of, say, psychologists, sociologists, philosophers, etc. ? Because they're wealthy and pretty?
I dunno....I'm also wondering what a genuinely Christian response to this would/should be, at least for me. I'm considering un-plugging from secular entertainment more and just taking up more reading. I mean, past generations weren't as thoroughly, constantly entertained as we are. I read that the last couple generations--particularly this latest one--are more prone to various degrees of narcissism, and media saturation may be part of the problem. Just thinking out loud...
Blah blah blah. Early AM thoughts. Tell me what you think.
