Bible Study Holocaust: Psalms 39-45

M

MrVersatile48

Guest
Was it Derek Prince who said how amazing that many Jews found Psalms 39-45 especially expressed their feelings in '39-'45

With Iran threatening to wipe Israel out, I found it powerful to pray those Psalms on Holocaust Memorial Day, putting myself in Jews' shoes

Psalm 39-45 (New International Version)

Psalm 39
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David

1 I said, "I will watch my ways
and keep my tongue from sin;
I will put a muzzle on my mouth
as long as the wicked are in my presence."

2 But when I was silent and still,
not even saying anything good,
my anguish increased.

3 My heart grew hot within me,
and as I meditated, the fire burned;
then I spoke with my tongue:

4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end
and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting is my life.

5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Each man's life is but a breath.
Selah

6 Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro:
He bustles about, but only in vain;
he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it.

7 "But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.

8 Save me from all my transgressions;
do not make me the scorn of fools.

9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth,
for you are the one who has done this.

10 Remove your scourge from me;
I am overcome by the blow of your hand.

11 You rebuke and discipline men for their sin;
you consume their wealth like a mothâ€â€
each man is but a breath.
Selah

12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD,
listen to my cry for help;
be not deaf to my weeping.
For I dwell with you as an alien,
a stranger, as all my fathers were.

13 Look away from me, that I may rejoice again
before I depart and am no more."

Psalm 40
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.

3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the LORD.

4 Blessed is the man
who makes the LORD his trust,
who does not look to the proud,
to those who turn aside to false gods. [a]

5 Many, O LORD my God,
are the wonders you have done.
The things you planned for us
no one can recount to you;
were I to speak and tell of them,
they would be too many to declare.

6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but my ears you have pierced , [c] ;
burnt offerings and sin offerings
you did not require.

7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have comeâ€â€
it is written about me in the scroll. [d]

8 I desire to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart."

9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;
I do not seal my lips,
as you know, O LORD.

10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
I speak of your faithfulness and salvation.
I do not conceal your love and your truth
from the great assembly.

11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD;
may your love and your truth always protect me.

12 For troubles without number surround me;
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails within me.

13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me;
O LORD, come quickly to help me.

14 May all who seek to take my life
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.

15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"
be appalled at their own shame.

16 But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation always say,
"The LORD be exalted!"

17 Yet I am poor and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
O my God, do not delay.

Psalm 41
For the director of music. A psalm of David.

1 Blessed is he who has regard for the weak;
the LORD delivers him in times of trouble.

2 The LORD will protect him and preserve his life;
he will bless him in the land
and not surrender him to the desire of his foes.

3 The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed
and restore him from his bed of illness.

4 I said, "O LORD, have mercy on me;
heal me, for I have sinned against you."

5 My enemies say of me in malice,
"When will he die and his name perish?"

6 Whenever one comes to see me,
he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander;
then he goes out and spreads it abroad.

7 All my enemies whisper together against me;
they imagine the worst for me, saying,

8 "A vile disease has beset him;
he will never get up from the place where he lies."

9 Even my close friend, whom I trusted,
he who shared my bread,
has lifted up his heel against me.

10 But you, O LORD, have mercy on me;
raise me up, that I may repay them.

11 I know that you are pleased with me,
for my enemy does not triumph over me.

12 In my integrity you uphold me
and set me in your presence forever.

13 Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.

Psalm 42
BOOK II : Psalms 42-72
1
For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah. [e]

[f] As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, O God.

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?

3 My tears have been my food
day and night,
while men say to me all day long,
"Where is your God?"

4 These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go with the multitude,
leading the procession to the house of God,
with shouts of joy and thanksgiving
among the festive throng.

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and 6 my God.

My [g] soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermonâ€â€from Mount Mizar.

7 Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.

8 By day the LORD directs his love,
at night his song is with meâ€â€
a prayer to the God of my life.

9 I say to God my Rock,
"Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about mourning,
oppressed by the enemy?"

10 My bones suffer mortal agony
as my foes taunt me,
saying to me all day long,
"Where is your God?"

11 Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

Psalm 43

1[h] Vindicate me, O God,
and plead my cause against an ungodly nation;
rescue me from deceitful and wicked men.

2 You are God my stronghold.
Why have you rejected me?
Why must I go about mourning,
oppressed by the enemy?

3 Send forth your light and your truth,
let them guide me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to the place where you dwell.

4 Then will I go to the altar of God,
to God, my joy and my delight.
I will praise you with the harp,
O God, my God.

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

Psalm 44
For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.

1 We have heard with our ears, O God;
our fathers have told us
what you did in their days,
in days long ago.

2 With your hand you drove out the nations
and planted our fathers;
you crushed the peoples
and made our fathers flourish.

3 It was not by their sword that they won the land,
nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand, your arm,
and the light of your face, for you loved them.

4 You are my King and my God,
who decrees [j] victories for Jacob.

5 Through you we push back our enemies;
through your name we trample our foes.

6 I do not trust in my bow,
my sword does not bring me victory;

7 but you give us victory over our enemies,
you put our adversaries to shame.

8 In God we make our boast all day long,
and we will praise your name forever.
Selah

9 But now you have rejected and humbled us;
you no longer go out with our armies.

10 You made us retreat before the enemy,
and our adversaries have plundered us.

11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep
and have scattered us among the nations.

12 You sold your people for a pittance,
gaining nothing from their sale.

13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors,
the scorn and derision of those around us.

14 You have made us a byword among the nations;
the peoples shake their heads at us.

15 My disgrace is before me all day long,
and my face is covered with shame

16 at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me,
because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.

17 All this happened to us,
though we had not forgotten you
or been false to your covenant.

18 Our hearts had not turned back;
our feet had not strayed from your path.

19 But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals
and covered us over with deep darkness.

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
or spread out our hands to a foreign god,

21 would not God have discovered it,
since he knows the secrets of the heart?

22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

23 Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep?
Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.

24 Why do you hide your face
and forget our misery and oppression?

25 We are brought down to the dust;
our bodies cling to the ground.

26 Rise up and help us;
redeem us because of your unfailing love.

Psalm 45
For the director of music. To the tune of "Lilies." Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. A wedding song. [k]

1 My heart is stirred by a noble theme
as I recite my verses for the king;
my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.

2 You are the most excellent of men
and your lips have been anointed with grace,
since God has blessed you forever.

3 Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one;
clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.

4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously
in behalf of truth, humility and righteousness;
let your right hand display awesome deeds.

5 Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king's enemies;
let the nations fall beneath your feet.

6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.

8 All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia;
from palaces adorned with ivory
the music of the strings makes you glad.

9 Daughters of kings are among your honored women;
at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.

10 Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear:
Forget your people and your father's house.

11 The king is enthralled by your beauty;
honor him, for he is your lord.

12 The Daughter of Tyre will come with a gift, [l]
men of wealth will seek your favor.

13 All glorious is the princess within her chamber ;
her gown is interwoven with gold.

14 In embroidered garments she is led to the king;
her virgin companions follow her
and are brought to you.

15 They are led in with joy and gladness;
they enter the palace of the king.

16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers;
you will make them princes throughout the land.

17 I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;
therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.

SPECIAL REPORT FROM ISRAEL (February 22, 2007)

I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem.
They shall never hold their peace day or night.
You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent.
And give Him no rest until He establishes
And until He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.
(Is. 62:6-7)

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May they prosper who love you.
(Psalm 122:6)

For Zion's sake I will not hold my peace
And for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest,
Until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
And her salvation like a burning torch. (Is. 62:1)

Throughout Scripture we are encouraged to pray. But in all of Scripture there is only one place for which we are specifically called to pray- that place is Jerusalem.

How do we do that?

As we go about our lives being His people and His vessels in our nations, our cities, our neighborhoods, in our families and in our churches, how do we "pray for Jerusalem"? How is a connection made? How do we hear the heart of the Lord for a city located very far away from most of us?

Throughout the Word of God, Jerusalem always occupies a central place.

Abraham in obedience built an altar on Moriah ( a mountain in Jerusalem) to offer Isaac unto the Lord.

David brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, and his son Solomon built the Temple there.

When Yeshua (Jesus) walked this earth, Jerusalem was clearly a heart issue with him.

In both the Gospel of Matthew and of Luke, Yeshua laments that Jerusalem kills her prophets!

Wars have been fought over this city.

It has been in the hands of the Jebusites, of the Jews, the Romans, the Persians, the Crusaders, the Ottoman Turks, the British, the Jordanians.

From 1949 until June 1967 the Old City was divided with part being under Jordanian rule and part under Israeli sovereignty.

June 7, 2007 will mark 40 years since all of Jerusalem, after some 2550 years, came once again under the rule of the descendants of Jacob.

Under this Israeli authority, much land and property in the city is owned or claimed by various non-Israeli "Christian" denominations of the world-Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, the Anglican Church.

The Knesset (Israel's congress) building is itself built on land owned and leased by the Eastern Orthodox church.

The Mormons command an elegant presence on the slopes of the Mount of Olives; the Masons are reputed to hold annual rites in underground chambers near Damascus Gate.

There is contention over much of the property here; it seems that every religion desires to have a foothold in the city.

Jerusalem is known as the City of the King.

A small area is known as the City of David. The Jews pray at the Western Wall and the Muslims pray on the Temple Mount. If we could but see the angels and demons that hover over this city we would all be amazed!

BUT GOD!!!

This is His city...the place where He has put His name. And His mountain is here!

"I will return to Zion, and dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth, the Mountain of the Lord of hosts, the Holy Mountain" (Zech. 8:3).

Over the doors of the Dome of the Rock are written passages from the Koran declaring that "allah" has no son.

Psalm 2 of the Hebrew Scriptures states that YHVH the LORD of Hosts laughs - that He not only has a Son, but has ordained that that Son will reign on His throne on this very mountain.

A confrontation of beyond "epic proportions" is coming!

Books have been written about Jerusalem, songs have been sung about her, blood has been spilled on her, and battles fought over her. There will be more books, more songs, more blood and more battles.

So how do we pray? How do we stand? How do we become 'watchmen' on her walls?

I offer a few points for this season - this time between now and June 7, 2007 -- this incredibly significant 40-year (a "generation") anniversary of the return of Jerusalem to the Jews.

Pray for the Messianic REMNANT in the Land.

Pray for those Messianic believers who live here, work here, minister here . . . for their lives to be strong lights in a dark place. For the bond of shalom to be preserved between them, in this city rife with religious contention.

Pray for them to have positions and to gain favor in their jobs, in the government, in their communities and in the army.

Pray for Arab Christians in Jerusalem, for God's revelation concerning His purposes in His City.

Pray for unity, both among themselves and between themselves and their Messianic Jewish brothers and sisters.

Pray for love and courage and vision. For protection from Muslim Palestinian Arabs who hold them in contempt. For prosperity in their businesses and grace and provision for their families.

Pray for the Gentile believers whom God sends to minister here. Pray for them to have wise boldness in their ministries and to build relationships with Israelis.

Pray for visas and for favor with the Ministry of Interior. Pray that the Gates will be open for those whom the Lord sends, that they may go in and out without harassment.

Pray for the city government.

Our present Mayor is Jewish Orthodox. Our next mayor could also be Orthodox. We need a mayor who is open to the Messianic Body and will give them a voice and a place in the City.

Pray for the national government - for all corruption to be exposed and for the fear of the Lord to come on those who have positions here. Israel is presently undergoing the greatest crisis of exposure of corruption and impropriety among her elected leaders in her present-day history.

Pray for the true prophetic to be released - in Jerusalem and throughout Israel. Pray for false prophets to be silenced and true ones to be recognized and given a voice.

Pray for the leaders of the nation to CRY OUT for the voice of God, and for the voice of the Prophet to gain credence as in the days of Elijah and Elisha!

Pray for the Body of Messiah in the nations to have wisdom in how to give finances to Israel. Many desire to bless Israel, but they give ignorantly to organizations they encounter in sentimental ads on television - unaware that these are generally run by the ultra-Orthodox who hate Messianic believers. Or they gave to nationalistic causes, which are fine - but the Body here is poor!

Pray that there be greater discernment in giving.

Pray for the youth.

Pray for revival to come to Israeli youth who are looking to Eastern religions, empty philosophies, etc for fulfillment.

Pray for the believing youth to be bold in their friendships and love.

Worship as you watch!

"Your watchmen shall lift up their voices, with their voices they shall sing together; for they shall see eye to eye when the Lord brings back Zion." (Is. 52:8)

There is a huge battle over who will be worshipped in this city-the God of Israel?-or allah! Worship the God of Israel as you stand with Her!!!

Psalm 122:6 says 'pray' for the peace (shalom) of Jerusalem. In Hebrew the world is sha'al - request, demand, beg, desire earnestly. This shalom is not something we gently request - It is something we cry out for with all of our hearts!

Isaiah 62:1 says that we will not hold our peace and not rest until the righteousness of Jerusalem shines forth. Interestingly, the words translated "hold our peace" and "rest" in the Hebrew mean "I will not be quiet".

So praying for Jerusalem is not a "quiet" thing.

It is something we must do aloud.

It is something to DECLARE, to SPEAK FORTH.

"For Zion's sake I will not be quiet and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet!"

THE MESSAGE puts it this way: "Regarding Zion, I can't keep my mouth shut, regarding Jerusalem, I can't hold my tongue until her righteousness blazes down like the sun and her salvation flames up like a torch."

11. Pray for the Holy Spirit to grant you the revelation and grace to love Jerusalem-with the Love that God Himself has for her. The prosperity of the LORD rests on those who do so.

In blessing Jerusalem and the descendants of Abraham, we release grace and blessing back into our own families, our cities and nations (Psalm 122:6; Genesis 12:3)!
