Honoring God

Keeping the theme of this verse in mind, how do you think we give honor and glory to God?

Psalms 145:8-9 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

One thing I think about, is to reflect these traits to others, especially my children.

I agree. It reminds me of the saying that imitation is the highest praise. I think that we should reflect them, and just keep giving God the credit for all we do that is for Christ. I love that verse, and I love that His tender mercies are all over His works. I want to be like that. What a blessing we have if we own Him as our King. Thank you for this post, it was such a blessing today, and it has encouraged my heart to worship Him. The Lord bless you.

I like that verse, it is definatley not this angry tyrant God I am constantly hearing about in the Bible from all of these over zealot preachers on televison, not that all t.v. preachers are but some of them are. Its nice to see someone reminding other of who and what God is really about
Kudos to you Stove

I'm glad that you both appreciated that verse.

I think that that verse comes from Exodus 34:6-7. Boy, what a story that is huh? Just before this, Aaron had built a golden calf and God was ready to throw in the towel. Ha, God even called them "Moses'" people. Kinda like when your kid is bad and all of a sudden the kid is "Your" kid

But look what Moses says, he says, "Show me your glory!" (Exodus 33:18)

I know this sounds a bit dispursed, but what an awsome God we have! When I look at the cross, what I see is total honor toward God. What a merciful, mighty God we serve who deserves all honor and respect.

2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

What an honor to be able to have unveiled faces that others might see the light that shines like Moses' face when he came off the mountain.

And I can think of no better way to give honor to God, than to have him reflect through one of his children.

amen

For some odd reason, I kind of expected this thread to die...

Let me ask, If this thread were about the "Love of God", does anyone think that it would have gotten more responses? What if it would have been a contriversial thread? How many pages does anyone want to guess it would have went to?

Unfortunatly, we live in a love based society. Sadly, we miss out on honoring God because we become so focused on the love of God that we don't recognize His glory and his Honor displayed in his creation.

Take the book of John for example. People look at that book as the love book... but in actuality, it speaks more to God's honor than to God's love... but sadly, since we are a love based society, we don't even recognise honor when we read it.

In the OT, there were 24 words in hebrew that described honor. In the NT, there is one word that is translated either as Glory, or Honor... Something got lost in the translation...

Let me ask, what does it mean to "Honor" and what does it mean to "Love". I'll bet we could speak more on love, than honor...

Peace

I think that Jesus regarded honoring God so highly that He said. "Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name..." should be a pattern in all of our prayers. God is sacred, and holy, and the only one truely deserving of honor.

Honor means to me laying my own will down daily, and seeking His...this is how I honor Him with my life. Shedding self, and conforming to Christ, and holding that high in my actions, speech, work, and all areas of my life. He expects me to know that He is God, and have no other God's before Him. He expects me to not speak of Him in a careless, or casual manner. He expects me to not treat Him, His people, or His Word as nothing. He expects me to teach this to my children by living it before them, and teaching it to them.

This picture of honor is no longer put before us as it once was. Things that are noble, and true, are not held high. It is hard because we are raised in a time where honoring your parents, or your husband, or grandparents, and so on is frowned upon as an act of someone who is simple. We know longer care about how they would want us to act, or how they would want us to utilize their teaching, and honor their legacy in our life. Probably because of the breakdown of family, and the breakdown of much that is sacred in society. Satan is such a deceiver, and we have fallen for it.

I am convicted because I am guilty of not honoring God with my life in the fullest manner I should. I do not want to use Him, but to glorify Him, and honor Him. Thanks for the post it will help me pray for this in my life, and that it will penetrate my conduct and speech. The Lord bless you.

Thank you for such a wonderful post Lovely, I always enjoy reading what you have to write.

In my drive to work today, I listened to Jonah (as well as Micah, Obediah, Joel and Amos) and I really keyed in on how honor played such a major role in the Isrealites history. But in regard to Jonah, it really struck me how the Ninevites honored God in their actions and as a result, they were spared great destruction while Jonah sat and complained about a vine that he did not tend...

So I get to thinking about Jacob and Esau when Jacob meet his brother Esau for the first time after he fled and was in fear of his life and he said,
Genesis 33:10 And Jacob said, Nay, I pray you, if now I have found grace in your sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen your face, as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me.

Esau had all the right in the world to hate Jacob, but he had the face of God. And what is the face of God? I believe that the face of God is
Psalms 145:8-9 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

As a child of God, I beleive I give the greatest honor to God when I look toward the face of God. Too often I feel like I have the face of Jonah, where I feel like I deserve what God gives me and that the evil people in this earth need to be punished and so I am bluntly reminded what God has to say,

Jonah 4:10-11 Then said the LORD, You have had pity on the plant, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also many cattle?

I hate to sound like a Missourian, but boy doesn't that hit the nail just directly on the head! :D

I think you are correct in saying that anytime we feel like we deserve something from God (Jonah's attitude in your specific reference to him being a great example) we are not showing honor. Oh, how that convicts me straight to the middle of my heart, and stomach. Too many times I want people to treat me this way, or that way, because I feel as if I have some entitlement based my own behavior towards them. And that they do not based on something prejudicial I feel towards them. What a shameful thing for me to think. It's just the opposite actually. I confess I do this too much of the time. It is my self-righteousness that is my biggest fault, rooted in my vain pride. I am always struggling with it, and this behavior in thought, or deed, dishonor's God. I know that it is the humility of Christ that I need to have, deep inside of me, and then I will be able to show graciousness, compassion, and mercy... tender mercies, as God does towards me.

Even in the case of my own family, this applies. So many times I loose patience with my children, or I lack compassion when they have a problem that I think is no big deal, and has been brought up at an inconvient time. I am not reflecting the tender mercies of God moment to moment in my life, and it seems to be more pronounced toward those I am closest to. I want that likeness to be on my face, and to be gracious in my manner, and I know that God wants it for me.

I do thank Him for the grace to show me these things through His Word, and through His church. It is just my desire to keep striving to be like Him, even though I am no where near it at this point. Isn't it nice that He uses iron to sharpen iron with our relationships here, and that it helps us to cut through the muck right to Him? I Love that, and I am thankful for even small growth if He grants it. Thanks for the post. The Lord bless you today.

That was a great post Lovely. Thank you for being such a blessing on this thread.

For anyone else lurking about, what do you think about when you think about giving Honor to God. And how do you think that God honors us here on earth?

Peace

The posts here are so excellent until I don't think I could add much more.

I think that one of the purest forms of honoring God is through obedience and in knowing that God is so worthy by having a thankful heart toward Him.
Also to put Him above all else even if it means forsaking our own wants is one of the highest aspects of honor.
Honoring God is always in our actions as well as our words, which should flow daily as a direct result of our personal relationship with Him.

I fall so short sometimes.

Thank you Destiny! That was an excellent post as well!

I'd like to turn this thread in another direction. We know that we are to honor and glorify God; that is our purpose here on earth. But how does God honor us?

I believe he honors us by dwelling with us. By wiping away our tears and giving us hope. He blesses our works, our homes and our families bringing joy and mercy in and around our lives.

I know that I have been blessed in so many ways from my kids, to the automobile that I drive and the food on my table. Our God, is an honorable God! Amen!

To keep ourselves as living sacrifices, holy & pleasing to God.

Remember the past when you didn't live inside the blessings of God because you didn't know Him?
Now look around at the difference He's made in your family and the way you percieve life.
He honors those who honor Him!
He removes us from the curses of our old life and into the blessings that flow in SO MANY WAYS through knowing Him.
I think if we will always remember what He delieved us from, in other words never forget where we came from, then we will always appreciate His blessings so much more!!
So, He honors us with the best life possible!

I think God has honored us by spilling precious blood to make us heirs in a royal family. I am honored by this sacrifice of the Lamb of God, and by His perfect Love. The idea of God casting His eyes upon me in love, and making me the apple of His eye, makes me blush. In response, I want to walk as a woman of honor and grace. I want to respond to this by reflecting it back to Him, and others. The Lord bless you all.

Thanks destiny and lovely! Your posts were great!

destiny,
when I read your post, I am reminded by psalm 78 in it's entirety. I agree, we are not to forget where we have been delivered from. Amen.

lovely,
I am reminded of Psalm 84
1 How lovely are your tabernacles, O LORD of hosts!
2 My soul longs, yea, even faints for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
3 Yea, the sparrow has found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.
4 Blessed are they that dwell in your house: they will be still praising you. Selah.
5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in you; in whose heart are the ways to them.
6 Who passing through the valley of Baca makes it a well; the rain also fills the pools.7 They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appears before God.
8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah.
9 Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of your anointed.
10 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusts in you.
