Hi,

what do you think of horror movies? Myself, I've watched horror movies for a long time, from childhood just because I like the tension.

What is a Christian perspective of watching horror movies?

Blessings

I used to watch them as well, but now find no time for them. Mostly because there really is no edifying benefit to them, considering they are only made to scare people. Sure, it does follow the age old plotline of good verses evil, but you can find much more uplifting, and entertaining, movies that have the same element.

I love to scare when watching horror movies, but I never scare afterwards because I know that I don't have to be scared as it was only a movie. And I know that Lord holds my hand so I don't have to be scared.

My basic attitude is that I don't like to watch them; I can think of more profitable things to do.

However, when it comes to historical documentaries, for example, I think a video about the Translyvanian background to the historical figure Vlad Tepes, on which Bram Stoker's Dracula was based, can be interesting and instructive.

Then, again, the Gothic genre in clothing and make up is kind of related in some ways to it all, yet if it's done in moderation, it's not necessarily offensive.

There's a "new" horror movie running in theaters called "Evil Dead" it's a remake from 80's version, what do you think about this movie? Anyone seen?

AIR: Haven't seen it; and it doesn't sound like something that I would want to watch, honestly.

I think it's interesting, someone claims it's very scary movie and it's always interesting if someone claims that. I think I'm gonna watch it

Generally not a fan. My dad said he liked old horror movies, like from around the 40's. They're different than horror movies of today.

There were these Star Wars series of novels I used to read that were sort of like horror...at least, intended to be scary. Even though they scared me to death, I liked them. But no matter how scary they were, everything always turned out alright in the end. That's the kind of "horror" story I'd generally go for, I think.

Someone I know on dA, a Christian, did a journal about the horror genre. He said something to the effect of, in some ways he thinks it can reflect Christian principles, as good and evil are seen are black and white there. Evil is truly exposed.
I'll see if I can find that journal again, as my explanation doesn't do it justice and I may have gotten what was said off somewhere.

P.S.
I did read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein for school in 10th grade. Not sure if the original book qualifies as horror or not. It's more meant to be a moral lesson, I think.

My wife and I went to see it. It was quite sick, but I enjoyed it. It was too much for my wife. lol My mother in-law disapproved of us going to see it and posted "WWJD" on our facebook wall as a result, but I don't really care. I don't see anything wrong with actors portraying death and killing in a movie as long as it's not real. I do have a problem with death and violence in real life. And I just couldn't resist checking out the remake of one of my all-time favorite classic movie trilogies. I also enjoy the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I know many Christians disapprove of my taste in horror, but many Christians also think that Christian rock music is just as "evil" as Marylin Manson and Slayer, so I don't really care about their opinions.

I use to love horror movies with lots of blood and guts, the more blood the better I thought the movie was. Now that I'm older I find those movie less attractive and now enjoy supernatural or paranormal movies. There is something about lurking evil and a possible Mephistopheles spirit that can raise the hair on my arms.

Atonement: from where I sit, the spy/technothriller genre of movie, where the bad guys get blasted, with or without a lot of blood, probably responds to the deep longing for justice in audiences: maybe they are utterly disillusioned by the obsessions and distortions of the media and politics, and maybe this sometimes apocalyptic type of move kind of responds to an aspiring to see justice done 'at last'.

Of course, this is what Revelation is all about.

Blessings.
