So I'm taking a college world religion class and this is the topic my professor gave me to write about. But I'm having a little bit of trouble. So i was wondering if anyone could help me on that. I'm new here so sorry if I'm placing this in the wrong section.

well thanks in advance,

John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

We should ask ourselves if we are of Christ or the world.

when i said "modern society" i meant "our culture today"

Maybe you could begin by looking at the differences between modern societies which are predominantly and/or historically Christian and those which are not?

The modern church is worldly. There really is not a lot of difference between the church and the rest of society. The church used to follow the Way...now it just gets in the way! ;) :shame

That is not to say that Christianity has not influenced modern society. The abolition of slavery (although the bible does not forbid this) mercy towards criminals, welfare, religious holidays, days off from work (the weekend). etc

But these have been incidental, and have been the things that cater to the carnal mind. The things that society adopts from Christianity do not influence society towards Christianity. It is debatable whether any benefit has derived to society of the eternal kind through the influence of Christianity. I would think not. Christianity is not a storehouse of things that we can pick and choose from. That seems to be the domain of the modern church, anyway.

Rather, Christianity works on a level above and beyond society....at the level of our civilization. Here we have seen more effect. People at large seem to know more about spotting hypocrisy than those who are Christians. This is a positive benefit. It behooves the church to get their collective heads out of the sands of society and back into the heavenly realms where they belong. :-)

Christianity has very little impact on society. We live in a society that accepts all manner of wickedness as normal and right, while rejecting the word of the Lord. Of course, with very few Christians showing the love of Christ in their lives, it's not surprising that there is no respect for Christianity.

I think the influence of Christianity historically and at present can be seen in many things. Music, Art, Film, and Literature have all been heavily influenced by Christianity (George Handel, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Michelangelo etc.) If you listen to modern Rock or Metal music, it is full of biblical references and it is the same (but to a lesser degree) with modern film and literature. Non-Christian spirituality (belief in heaven/hell, angels/demons etc.) is influenced by Christianity. Our legal systems have been influenced by Christianity. Many of the words and phrases we use today originate from the Bible. Western morals (monogamy etc.) have been influenced by Christianity and more specifically by Christ's Sermon on the Mount. Even things like architecture and sub-cultures (like Goth's) have been influenced by Christianity.
