Bible Study How important is it to know what the Bible says?

The word of God is where we find the will of God.

2 Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

If one is not "approved unto God" the only other place that would leave one is "disapproved."

There is absolutely no way to know we are living in God's will, unless we know what His word says. Therefore, we must study, dilligently.

Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

We are going to be judged by the scriptures, therefore we had better know what they say.

John 12:48
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Jesus is our example in all things....he whooped the devil in the wilderness, with scripture:

Matthew 4:4
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

The word of God is referred to in scripture as the "sword of the Spirit" (Eph. 6:17) which is a part of the armor of God we must shield ourselves with in order to stand in the evil day.

Armor of God study

When we know the word of God, we know how to resist Satan.

The noble men of Berea searched the scriptures daily to be assured that what they were hearing preached, was truth.

Acts 17:10-11
10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

We MUST do the same. We absolutely CAN NOT take any man's word for anything. Not our brothers and sisters in Christ, not our friends, our family, message board buddies, we are all INDIVIDUALLY responsible before God to give account to Him for our own faith and actions. (Romans 14:10 , 2 Corinthians 5:10) I can not stress enough how important it is that we KNOW for ourselves what the word of God says. Any faithful preacher, well, any faithful Christian for that matter, will encourage you to open your Bible and prove for yourself what he teaches you. He will also ask you to correct him if you find, in the scriptures, that he is in error. The faithful Christian is always willing to be taught the way of God more accurately. (Acts 18:26) After all, we are Bible students our entire lives, always learning more, always striving. (Philippians 3:12)

The scriptures are inspired by God. ALL scripture. The scriptures are where we find out about salvation.

2 Timothy 3:15-17
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Some say that the above words written by Paul to Timothy was only referring to the OT scriptures. Paul, however, forever settles that, in his letter to the Ephesian Christians. In that letter, he acknowledges that the writings of the Apostles were inspired as well:

Ephesians 3:1-5
1 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand
my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

He also makes a statement to the Corinthian Christians that his words are direct commands of Jesus.

1 Corinthians 14:37
If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

Peter and John also acknowledge their own writings as inspired (1 Peter 1:10-12 , Revelation 1:1-3)

God did an amazing thing. He gave us this wonderfully amazing book, filled with "all things pertaining to life and godliness" (2 Peter 1:3), yes, it is the scriptures by which we have our faith in God and believe on His Son, and can have the hope of eternal life!

John 20:29-31
29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Romans 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
