Tithing is an Old Testament requirement.1 Corinthians 16:2 in the New Testament tells us tithing should be according to your income.It could be more or less than 10%.When I was attending a Church a long time ago and when I was broke I did not give anything.It is not a salvation issue.I do not attend a Church and I am going to heaven.
A tithe is 10 percent by definition. What would you supposed to tithe for ? (Jesus demanded a lot more than that--- many times, go see what He told those who followed Him, all through the new testament, especially in the Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke and John).

the widow Jesus pointed out gave 2 pennies. He said she gave more than the show-offs who gave $10,000.
her faith is still spoken about and known all over the world. the pastors (scribes/pharisees/priests) aren't known anywhere.
whatever God gives you to give. give. hold nothing back when He tells you to give. and don't say you gave it all if you give part (remember what happened to ananias and saphira - they died for lying to God about what they gave)
2Co 9:6 And this: He who is sowing sparingly, sparingly also shall reap; and he who is sowing in blessings, in blessings also shall reap;
2Co 9:7 each one, according as he doth purpose in heart, not out of sorrow or out of necessity, for a cheerful giver doth God love,
2Co 9:8 and God is able all grace to cause to abound to you, that in every thing always all sufficiency having, ye may abound to every good work,
I believe we should give what is within our budget to give. I don't think we should give so much that it would take a super natural act for you to pay the rest of your bills.
