How many different types of faith are there in scripture?

Edward what do you mean by the word "faith"

a : allegiance to duty or a person : loyalty

b (1) : fidelity to one's promises (2) : sincerity of intentions
2
a (1) : belief and trust in and loyalty to God (2) : belief in the traditional doctrines of a religion

b (1) : firm belief in something for which there is no proof (2) : complete trust
3
: something that is believed especially with strong conviction; especially : a system of religious beliefs <the Protestant faith>

That is indeed the question in my mind which spawned the thought for the thread. To answer your question, I think I can identify three types of faith in scripture. 1 a&b (which is sort of the same if you think about it. 2a and then 2b, which is actually the same as 3 in my mind.

Is this a trick question? :chin
Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism.

No, no trick question here brother. But you do raise a good point, so perhaps it was merely bad terminology and I should have named the thread how many different "levels" of faith?

Salvation is a gift. Relationship takes work. Once saved, most believers come under attack and their faith is attacked and many times defeated. So they never reach a level of faith wherein they can do (or allow) great works for God through them.

Why do we settle for what we have? Many bask in the blessed assurance of salvation and never even try to go heal someone or to get close enough to the Lord that they would be visited, or be able to...say, part a sea or walk on water. That's what I'm talking about. :)

Parting the Red Sea and Walking on Water are far from universal. How many total people have done this?

If we are looking from the "what is most needed" perspective, growing in faith today is more about putting on righteousness and expressing fidelity than walking on water or even on the moon, isn't it?

I agree with you, however, there are videos of people walking on water and testimonies of the same also. You make a good point though, if we only seek God and His righteousness, all these things that we need will be added unto us.

I've heard that things that we see today shall perish. If I found myself walking on water I don't know what I'd do. It would be strange. It would give me something to upload to YouTube, that's for sure, right?

It seems as if it would take a lot of faith that's for sure. One thing one would have to do though, to walk on water. Get out of the boat, lol.

Hey, what's the worst that could happen? You learn how to swim!

As Peter demonstrated already how quickly our faith can be tested even with Jesus standing before us in the flesh.

Yep, and the Apostles too! (Couldn't heal the epileptic boy) I did go and watch the video again of a guy I had seen walking on the water...and watched real closely and...I think it appears as if there is a sand bar in the river, and you can see the guys feet going under water just a bit. So that one (which I thought was credible) actually probably is not.

I did listen to one gus sermon on youtube and he gave a testimony of his youth group at the beach and he told them ok we're all going to walk on water today and a bunch of them went into the water and at first he said that all of them couldn't do it, but then he looked way down to the end of the line of kids...and three of them were actually walking on the water. No video on that, and he did sound credible...buuut???

That seems kind of a mockery. Jesus walked on water for a reason, and for people to just say like its a fun activity " Ok lets test our faith and/or putting the lord to the test, today we are going to walk on water. I dont know, it just does not seem right. I think they would all start sinking. Just my opinion.

Well, I'm not sure about that. I would think that for fun would be a mockery of sorts and that it would certainly have to be within Gods will for it to happen for someone. But are we not to pursue the gifts? Did Jesus not say that all that he does we shall be able to do, and more?

If we were to do it so that we could have a testimony and brag, sure, I'd agree with you then. But if we are seeking to get closer to God and to exercise our spiritual senses and increase our faith...perhaps. Just perhaps, I am not laying this down as if to say ok everyone go walk on water now. But, it may be possible, if we needed to, and it was in the Lords will (of course!)

This thread was slightly impulsive and a few thoughts I was having. I am certainly not meaning to teach that we can or it is possible, or anything of the sort. Just merely striving to come closer to God lately, and to explore the possibilities, so take it with a grain of salt brother. We're just tossing it around a little. :)

Bless you.

At least two types reflected in four combinations.
Faithful beliefs and Faithful works
Faithless beliefs and Faithful works
Faithful beliefs and Faithless works
Faithless beliefs and Faithless works
