Nothing like the ol' medical school of thought when the country doctor (who then was actually interested in making people well rather than increasing their drug stock portfolio) used to say to the sick person, "Get plenty of fresh air, rest, relaxation, and a good walk in the the sun." Now, the medical world would have us cowering in fear of the sun like Draculas supposedly to prevent skin cancer. While decreased exposure to sunlight may decrease some incidents of less detrimental skin cancer, the lack of sunlight has been associated with increased risk of Melanoma, the most deadly kind. It's as if a person prone to skin cancer will trade the deadly type of cancer for the lesser dangerous type if they only have enough faith in the Son (uh, I meant sun) to trust that God would not put a big cancerous-causing fireball in the sky the way some people way off their rocker seem to think.
So, how much? First of all, if the UV index is under 3, I doubt you'll make any vitamin D3 at all, which is the purpose of getting sunlight. So, to help guide us toward good sun health, here's a chart stating how long one will have to be in the sun to produce 10,000 units. Take note that it's better in the middle of the day since early or late in the day one can still be burned with UVA type radiation without producing vitamin D3 (needing UVB). Also take note that people over 50 should double their sun time as we lose our ability to manufacture vitamin D3 as we age. The chart accounts for all skin types, so there's no excuse "that I burn easily". Nobody is asking you to burn, but let's not equate that with avoiding the sun, or blocking it off with sunblock altogether.
The question is asked on this site what is the main cause of vitamin D deficiency, and the answer is LACK OF SUNLIGHT! But the thing that galls me is that while this valuable vitamin helps prevent cancers, heart disease, diabetes, depressions and whatnot, that's the very thing they tell you to avoid, the sun! (I think it goes without saying they avoid the Son, too!) So I wonder if they really want to cure people, or keep them managed with drugs? But I digress on another conspiracy theory.
DISCLAIMER: This comes from a vegetarian site. I am not vegetarian, and don't believe in it, but I am open enough to still realize that they can have other information correct. Vitamin D from the sun has nothing to do with being a vegetarian or not.
