Bible Study How to Test the Spirits?

How do you test the spirits, and prophets to see if they are false, as we have many that say they have the 'spirit' or the 'spirit allows them to speak in tongues', or they were told to do or say things 'by a spirit', or give 'prophecies or interpretation from a spirit', etc.. Scripture definably tells us to do this...
1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

There are indeed many false spirits and false prophets out in the world today, which are deceiving many. So how can we recognize a false spirit or the spirit of a false prophet or teacher and don’t be taken in by them. And how do we test them?

Well the Bible lists a series of tests that can be applied to test the spirits or prophets to determine whether they are genuine or not. Taken individually, it is possible to counterfeit many of these tests, but collectively, they provide an impassable barrier to these false spirits or prophets, as even in Bible times we see them at work.

Acts 16:16
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

Those with these false spirits can quote scripture or have demons help them and have some of their 'divinations' come true, but they can still be false and lead God's people astray. John says that we must test the spirits to see whether they are from God and this means that we must test what the spirits are saying, or doing, or telling us to say. So lets see the tests..

1) A true spirit or prophet's message will be in complete harmony with the word of God and the law of God.
Isaiah 8:20
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

2) A true spirit or prophet's will produce the attributes given us in the scripture, goodness, righteousness and truth as well as love and more.
Ephesians 5:9
(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance:..

3) A true spirit or prophet gives counsel to edify the church, and has a grace and wisdom from God.
Luke 2:40
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
1 Corinthians 14:3-5
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

4) A true spirit or prophet will exalt Christ as the Son of God and the Saviour of mankind, and lift up the church, the body of Christ.
1 John 4:11-15
12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

Ephesians 2:11-13
11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

5) The true spirit or prophet will bear good fruit and give Gods truth with great authority.

Matthew 7:20
Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Matthew 7:29
For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Mark 1:22
And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

Luke 1:17
And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Jesus is the supreme example, and He spoke those things which He had seen and heard from the Father, and we see the spirit preparing and turning the people to Christ.

How do you test the spirits, and prophets to see if they are false,
One simple idea to remember is that God will never contradict what he has already said in the bible.
Example. The bible teaches that Christians should gather together for worship etc, so a ' message ' saying don't is clearly not from God.

Another thought is that one of the holy Spirits role is to glorify Jesus and God the Father.

So does this ' message ' do that.
Testing a message against scripture implies one has a good knowledge of scripture, so don't be afraid to seek advice from ones pastor.

Well, Christ had to deal with a lot of 'spirits' and notice what kind..
Matthew 8:16
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

Luke 8:2
And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,

Luke 9:42
And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

And we see we will have to face them even now at the end...
Revelation 16:14
For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

Rule of thumb is if what one says does not line up with scripture then do not believe a word they say. Many are very deceptive and can change just one word in a verse to change the whole of what God already had His prophets and disciples to write.

John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
John 12:49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
John 12:50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

You also have to be aware that if you accept a 'spirit' and allow it in, it can make you say things out of your own mouth and do things with your body that is not you as we see many times, and notice what they plead...
Mark 1:23-24
23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

And they knew who Christ was but the person they had taken over was still under 'spirits' control..

Mark 3:11-12
11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.
12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.

And those with the 'spirit' were not speading the Gospel with the tongue, or singing words of praise, or clearly not loving God and their fellow man when they had the 'spirit'...

Mark 5:2-3
2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

And in fact the people that had these 'spirits' were vexed, violent or worse, and their loved ones wanted it out much like what we would see in the islands.

Mark 7:25-26
25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

And those with the 'spirit' would throw themselves down and act in a manner we see even today...

Luke 9:39-42
39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

And notice these people were 'possessed' with these 'spirits' when they were doing these things...
Acts 8:7
For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

So have to see what 'spirit' is speaking from you....

This is why we need to learn how to Spiritually learn to discern what spirit is speaking to us
Yes, but when you have someone babbling and singing incoherent and incomprehensibly which edifies no one saying they 'spiritually' discerned it, then what.

Th
Yes, but when you have someone babbling and singing incoherent and incomprehensibly which edifies no one saying they 'spiritually' discerned it, then what.
Then you know it's of self and not from the Holy Spirit, especially when it is not edifing. The Holy Spirit will never speak through anyone that does not edify the assembling. Seen so many fakers in my life.

Hello Rick, Great post, Good question and how are you, Brother? and looking at this thread, Jesus did this kind of thing by His spirit that is within Him, and He said: greater things we can do, Paul said: he can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, hope this helps.

Love, Walter
Very good Walter thanks for asking. Well you have to remember that there were other spirits that were in people and not necessarily 'good' ones...

Luke 22:3
Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

And that many will have to be 'healed of evil spirits and infirmities' before the end, as it will lead them away from God if they are not cleansed of them..

Luke 8:2
And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,

And we need to be careful of what 'spirit' we are dealing with as plainly Christ had to deal with a lot of 'spirits' and notice what kind..
Matthew 8:16
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

But today, we see all these people letting 'spirits' take over them and saying its from God, no discernment or understanding to say the least..

How do you test the spirits, and prophets to see if they are false, as we have many that say they have the 'spirit' or the 'spirit allows them to speak in tongues', or they were told to do or say things 'by a spirit', or give 'prophecies or interpretation from a spirit', etc.. Doesn't John go on to explain?

1 John 4:2-6
2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;
3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.
4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
5 They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them.
6 We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

So, John says a "spirit" may tested by the following:

Does the "spirit" agree that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, that is, the promised, prophesied Messiah, the Anointed One, has come from God with divine power and authority in the Person of Jesus. If the "spirit" does not affirm this wholeheartedly, the "spirit" is not from God.

If the World attends to a "spirit," agreeing with it, even applauding it, that "spirit" isn't from God.

A "spirit" the World will not hear, that the World hates and persecutes because it lifts Jesus high as the Redeemer and future Judge of the World, is of God.

Doesn't John go on to explain?

Not if one is already occupied by the Holy Spirit. No demon has the power to invade a "temple" of the Holy Spirit and possess it. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Demons may oppress a born-again believer, hindering their spiritual lives severely, but they can't wrest control of their mouths forcing them to say demonic things. And so, none of the verses you've offered describe a born-again person possessed of a demon. Nor is such a thing described anywhere in the NT.

Thats the thing, if you look at these christians that speak/sing in tongues, its a end all be all. They 'claim' that they are 'occupied by the Holy Spirit' and stop there, no fruits or change and thats their salvation. 'I spoke in it', 'I sang in it' and thus all they need to do to 'prove' they have reach what God intended and asks, not good..

Galatians 3:
1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

1 John 2:
24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. 26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

1 John 4:
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Those who have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit also have the anointing that gives us the right of understanding of all we need to know. Unlike those who teach heresies and have no truth found in them. We know we are not going to be deceived by the false teachers (antichrist) that have gone out into the word, but are none of Christ as they have no anointing of the Holy Spirit, 2 Timothy 3:1-7.

The anointing of the Holy Spirit would never replace the teachings of Christ, but as what we started in our learning from the teachers in our beginning we now know how to discern that of what is being taught to us as we study for our self to know for a surety through the Holy Spirit confirming and giving us understanding of that which is being taught us by others. The Holy Spirit will also bring those scriptures we learned from back to our remembrance as we teach others, John 14:26.

1 John 2:26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. This is why it is said in vs. 27 let no man teach you which means do not allow those who are false teachers having not the anointing of the Holy Spirit teach you. We are to safeguard ourselves from false teachings. The Holy Spirit is all we need to correctly interpret that of what we are being taught, 2 Timothy 2:15, 16.

In my experience, those who have turned to sensuality in an attempt to experience God usually neglect, or badly twist, His word, refusing to live in conformity to it. And so, they migrate into "Christian" living that isn't spiritual, but fleshly, that is of a kind with the rest of their mundane living where, through their physical senses, they interact with their environment and other people and creatures.

Many Christians want God, who is an immaterial Spirit, to be just as tangible, just as accessible to their physical senses, as anything, or anyone else, in their lives. In fact, they expect more from Him in this regard, since He's God; He has to "show up" in supernatural ways, throwing them to the ground in demon-possession style, forcing them to babble unintelligibly, or cry out in hysteria and convulse, or give them tingles, zaps or warm oozies, or appear as a fog, feathers or gold dust falling from ac/heating ducts.

Rather than the "inner witness" of the Spirit through his transformation of their desires, thoughts and actions (2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 5:22-23; Philippians 2:13), his illumination of their minds and hearts to divine Truth (John 14:26; John 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:10-16), his strengthening of them in times of temptation and trial (Ephesians 3:16; Philippians 4:13; Romans 8:13), his conviction of them (John 16:8; Revelation 2-3), and his comforting of them in seasons of suffering and sorrow (2 Corinthians 1:3-4), these Christians look for external "signs," searching for a physical intersection with a non-physical God. But in their sensual pursuit of God, they take up silly, paganistic and trivial counterfeits of God "showing up." They thrill over a tingle across their skin, crying out, "It's God!" or they jabber like a monkey and declare, "The Holy Spirit is here!" But in the record of Scripture, when God "showed up," His appearance was nothing like such silly things:

Exodus 13:21-22
21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:
22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Exodus 14:21-22
21 ...and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

Exodus 24:16-17
16 The glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; and on the seventh day He called to Moses from the midst of the cloud.
17 And to the eyes of the sons of Israel the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the mountain top.

Exodus 40:34-35
34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
35 Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Leviticus 9:23-24
23 Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting. When they came out and blessed the people, the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people.
24 Then fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the portions of fat on the altar; and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.

1 Kings 8:10-11
10 It happened that when the priests came from the holy place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD,
11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.

Acts 2:1-4
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

And so on.

It's always been amazing to me how eagerly the sensual Christian can be led to accept as from God the weak, trivial things that are these days declared to be from Him. But this is what happens when believers are keen to make interaction with God, who is a Spirit, a physical, sense-oriented, fleshly thing.

Galatians 5:17
17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.

Romans 8:5-8
5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,
7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,
8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Matthew 16:4 (NASB)
4 "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign..."
